“I didn’t know it was possible to feel proud of someone else’s actions. But I amveryproud of you.”

She blinked up at him. Literally no one had ever said that to her before. No one in her whole life.

That dragon-green gaze met hers and she saw he was serious.

“Because I’m a level six?” She guessed.

“Because youfought. Your magic is different. Good and Bad mixed together and competing for supremacy. I felt it. But you managed to make it work. I’m not sure another being alive could have done what you just did. Not even me.” His hand slipped lower, caressing and demanding. “I am more turned on than I have ever been and you’re still clothed.”

“You promised to rip my clothes off of me.” Esmeralda reminded him with a pious expression. “I’m expecting you to keep your word.”

“I always keep my word to my mate. A thousand percent.” Trevelyan’s breathing was growing rougher. His fingers slipped under her nightgown, finding the edge of her underwear and herdamp flesh beneath. Without warning, one finger pressed inside of her. Taking the territory he wanted.

Esmeralda jolted, her head falling onto his shoulder.

“My mate.” His voice sounded deeper and echoing. More like a dragon’s. “Justmine.”

For people with powers, magic was always kind of an aphrodisiac. For Trevelyan, it seemed like even more than that.Herpowers excited him. The strength and feel and color of them. Esmeralda realized that he now considered her magic his. Just like her cookies were his. Just likeshewas his.

Possession was a part of the man.

Tendrils of smoke curled off of him. They felt exotic and erotic against her skin. She couldn’t wait until Trevelyan had enough of his powers back to coat her whole body in that magical, dragon-y essence. And hewould. She’d make sure of it. His green magic was so much like hers, but different, too. Savagely elegant. Precise and lethal as a blade, it moved like a natural extension of his body.

The dragon didn’t use magic. Hewasmagic. It was a part of his DNA. She wanted to feel that confidently flowing powereverywhere. If her magic belonged to him, then his belonged to her. It was only fair.

Trevelyan noticed the wispy precursors to his dragon-form floating around his body and swore softly, yanking his hand back. “Later.” He let out a controlled rush of air. “Much later.” He stepped back from her. It seemed to take all of his willpower to make it a foot away. “It would be…betterto wait.”

She had never seen Trevelyan so close to the edge before. His whole face was taut. Esmeralda’s gaze slipped down to thefront of his soft pants. He was so aroused, she had no idea how he was still standing upright. In response, her own desire cranked all the way up to a blazing inferno.

“Why do we have to wait?” She challenged. “Everyone’s dead. I get my orgasms. A deal is a deal.”

He rolled one shoulder, like he felt stretched in his own skin. “It’s just not a wise idea for me to touch you, when I’m like this.”

“If we postpone sex again, you’ll just do something new to piss me off and I’ll never get laid. Right now isperfect. I want you. You want me. What’s the problem?”

“Idowant you.” He shook his head. “But the monster inside of me wants you, too. It wantsout. It wants to hold you down and fuck you right here on the floor. That’sthe problem.”

Oh.

The Club Castle

“Well, that’s just silly.” Maryanna, Queen of Clubs, shook her head. “Not even a dragon could defeat my army. We sentlegionsof knights. Didn’t we send legions of knights, Hatty?” She looked over at her husband for confirmation.

The Mad Hatter nodded, no small feat, considering he was sitting upside down on his throne, with his legs pointed up in the air. He was twirling his pocket watch round and round his bare foot by its chain. The watch went arcing out like a yo-yo as far as it could in one direction. Then, he would flip his ankle and it would spin back the opposite way. Since that mechanism of cogs and gears sustained his literal heartbeat, she wished he’d be a tiny bit more careful with it.

“Reports were related to us as it happened, majesty. This is all slightly confusing, because we lost…. um… everyone. But,it seems that it wasn’t actually Trevelyan who killed them all.” The unfortunate playing card guard who’d been tasked with delivering the report swallowed. “It was the new Queen of Hearts.”

“The witch?” The Queen of Clubs scoffed at that foolishness. “Impossible. Esmeralda is no queen. She’s just a pawn in a game she barely understands. Good grief, she was sent to prison for scaring some teenagers, who were trying to eat her absurd gingerbread house.”
