And last night was great.

Awesome!

Hope I didn’t wake you.

You did

Oh no! Sorry :(

It’s okay.

Also, I’m sorry about the handshake.

No worries.

I like a good handshake now and again ;)

Well, I’m available whenever you feel the need.

Oh god. That did not come out as intended.

I’m going to drown myself in the shower now.

Hahahaha

Please don’t!

I don’t want to have to find another husband.

See you soon!

Lachlan’s face hurts from the smile Petra caused. Warmth blooms in his chest, realizing he didn’t ruin things with that stupid handshake, and she still wants to marry him. Well, fake marryhim.

He rolls out of bed with a pep as he goes to shower. He puts extra care into his styling routine when he’s done, ensuring he looks good for their “unplanned” meetup. Opting for jeans, a gray T-shirt, and his brown coat, he ties his hair back in a bun, satisfied that he looks casual but decent enough to meet up with someone.

As he’s walking out the door, he spots the little envelope with the summons to the Wilks Estate for this evening. He puts the envelope in his coat pocket, grabs his keys, and heads out the door, excited to spend the morning with Petra.

CHAPTERNINE

Petra

Petra can’t help but feel a warm glow from deep inside. Perhaps it’s just the magic flowing inside her veins, or maybe it’s due to the hot demon she went out with last night. Either way, she’ll take it.

It feels like it’s been forever since she has felt this light. Given everything going on with her and with Gammy at the moment, she feels a little guilty for feeling good. But instead of wallowing in worry and negativity, she’s doing her best to stay focused on how happy she felt after last night.

Her magic sparks inside her at the thought of Lachlan, and she reminds herself to keep her feelings in check. This is fake. He doesn’t actually want to marry you.Even so, she lets the spark sizzle just a little bit longer.

Petra throws her hair into a ponytail and puts on a pair of dark wash jeans with a cream-colored knit sweater and beige wedge boots. With a glance in the mirror, she verifies that she looks decent and market-ready, and is out the door.

She makes it to the market only fifteen minutes late. She’s already apologizing as she strides across the parking lot to where Daisy stands with Lachlan.Damn, he’s quick!

“I’m so sorry. I got stuck in traffic on the way,” she says.

“Yeah. Sure. There’s so much traffic in the like five blocks from your place,” Daisy teases.

Petra holds her hand to her chest, feigning shock. “There was! I saw a herd of elephants blocking the way!”

“Uh-huh,” Daisy says, giving Petra the most dramatic eye roll.
