Is that a no?
Not at all. It’s a surprise, that’s all.
When and where?
There is an opening at city hall at 4:30. Does that work?
Sounds like the perfect time to get married :)
Great. I’ll book it.
See you soon, future husband.
See you soon, future wife.
Lachlan sets his phone down on the counter and pumps his fist. “Fuck, yes!” he shouts before realizing he is not at home but at Taster’s Delight, which is currently filled with people getting their morning brew. Quickly apologizing to the people in the dining area, he picks up his coffee and heads out the door with an extra pep in his step, the bell above the door chiming happily behind him as he steps into the brisk fall wind.

Petra
Goddesses’ gonads, I’m getting married.
Surprised that Lachlan agreed to such a quick wedding, Petra starts scrambling to get everything in order, which is made more complicated by the fact she has to work today. But she feels goddess-blessed that she had the early shift. Before she leaves her apartment, Petra makes sure to pack her makeup and mother’s veil in her car.
Thankfully, Daisy is off today. When she called to tell Daisy the plan for the day, she immediately went into witch-of-honor mode, asking for a list of things she needed to do before meeting Petra at City Hall.
On her lunch break that afternoon, she heads out to the play yard for some quiet so she can call Gammy.
“Hello, my darling granddaughter,” Gammy says after answering the call on the first ring like a monster.
“Hi, Gammy.”
“How are you doing, love? Are you eating and sleeping well?”
“Yes, yes, I’m okay. Thank you. And thank you for trying to help me sort through everything—and for sending Lachlan.”
“Hmm. I’m glad it all worked out.”
“Anyway, I don’t have much time since I’m on my lunch break, but I wanted to let you know that Lachlan and I decided to get married.”
“Yes, I know, darling. Remember, I was there when we devised the whole marriage plan.”
“No, no, I meant we are getting marriedtoday.”
“Oh. Wait, today?”
“Yes, I booked us at city hall at four thirty. Will you please join us?”
Gammy is silent on the other end. It takes her a moment before she finally answers. “Yes, of course, my darling. I wouldn’t miss it. Is there anything you need me to do or bring?”
Petra almost sighs audibly in relief. While she was ninety-nine percent sure Gammy would agree, Petra certainly thought there would be more of a fight or at least some questions. “Do you have a dress I can borrow? I want something more vintage in style.”
“I have theperfectdress,” Gammy says excitedly.
“Thank you. Love you.”
“Love you too, darling,” Gammy replies before Petra ends the call.
