And it gave her courage.
He was here.
He would protect her.
She finished tying the last cable, praying it would hold. Apart from Leyra, none of them were fighters. Kiara had never held a weapon in her life–but she’d hold her own against the invaders.
“Okay, ladies, it’s show time,” she said, even as the bastards continued to ram the wall.
Beyond it, she heard the clash of metal against metal and bullets. God, please let Deryg be okay.
The four of them rushed toward Nazyn’s office, crowding behind the door. Kiara stood closest to it, peering into the lab through the small slit they’d left open.
Carol crouched beside her, clutching her golden lighter.
They all trembled; except for Leyra, but she was breathing heavier than Kiara had ever heard on a Deruzian.
“Whatever happens, it has been an honor to fight alongside you,” Leyra whispered. “I admire your inventiveness. Deruzianshave relied too much on brute strength to evolve that particular skill.”
“Thanks. But we’re getting out of here,” Kiara muttered as the hole in the wall grew.
Those shadows would pummel through it.
They wanted something from this lab, that was certain. There was no reason to hunt the four of them down like this.
“Darcy, have you been working on some top secret project?” Kiara asked.
“We finished the last one about two months ago,” Darcy whispered. Even her words trembled. “There’s nothing here. Except–”
Kiara’s heart shrunk as the tip of the ram burst through the wall. Beyond it, Deryg’s roars intensified.
Good. Let him show them his Deruzian strength.
The metal shrieked as it contorted inwards.
Kiara clenched her jaw.
This was it.
They were coming.
A laser beam erupted from the hole, cutting through the grate.
“I want you all to stay as calm as possible,” Kiara whispered, barely moving her lips. But her words felt humongous in the tight space. “Everything will go according to plan.”
She hoped. But what good would it do to doubt right now?
They had prepared as best they could.
There was no turning back.
Nowhere to run.
The only thing they could do was face the enemy.
The melted grate fell to the floor with a hollow clank.
A moment of complete stillness descended upon them.
