Felixstirred. “Iguess we should go home.Imean, to the guest cottage.”

Ididn’t call him out on it, butIagreed.Itwasn’t the building that made it feel like home, it was being together withFelixin the same space, sharing those small intimate moments that built a bond between two people.

Fuck,Iwas in deep.Andwe’d only been officially dating for twenty-four hours.

Felixwas restless most of the night, andIdidn’t want to sleep in caseIhad nightmares.BymidnightMariposahad abandoned us for the couch where she could sleep without getting jostled by the two of us tossing and turning.FelixandIgave up and got out of bed around 6am even though it was still dark.

“Youwanna go outside and watch the sunrise?”Ioffered.Therewas a slight hill on the main road to the east which would have a better view, but we could probably see well enough from the back deck of the ranch house.

Felixgaped at me. “Youwant to watch the sunrise?”

 Ifrowned. “What?You’resurprisedIcan be romantic?”

“I’msorry.”Hecame over and hugged me, crutches and all. “It’snot you.I’venever watched the sunrise with anyone before.”

Igrunted, relaxing and putting my hand on his waist.Ikissed his temple. “Wellthat’s a shame.Let’sgo check it out.”

We’dgone to bed in our underwear, so we pulled on sweatpants, t-shirts and shoes before walking down the drive toward the main house.Birdswere starting to chirp, and the cool air was refreshing.Arturo, the ranch manager, drove slowly by, followed soon by a couple of the ranch hands, all waving as they passed us.

I’dbeen right about the elevation of the deck.Itwas the perfect height to see over the fences surrounding the paddocks.Felixleaned against the deck’s railing, andIstood behind him while we watched the sky streak with pink and orange.Felix’sbody was soft and easy against mine.Iloved the feel of him—no hard muscles but still strong and sturdy.Bythe time the sun rose too high to look at anymore, my dick was very interested in what we might do next.

Whichwas of course exactly when the puppies, followed byJason, came out onto the deck.Jasonmust have seen us from inside the house because he didn’t seem surprised to find us there.

Aftergetting ear scratches from bothFelixand me, the dogs took off toward the barn.

“Goodmorning,”Jasonsaid. “Youguys want some coffee? There’sa pot in the kitchen.”

“Morningand heck, yes,”Felixsaid. “Youwant some,Malcolm?”Igrunted and he headed inside, pattingJasonon the arm as he passed him.Ismiled at how comfortable he was with those three.

“Sorryto intrude on your deck,”Isaid toJason.

“You’rewelcome anytime,” he said. “Ourbedroom is on the opposite end of the living room, so you won’t disturb us if you’re out here.”

“Thanks. It’sa great view of the sunrise.”

Jasonsmiled fondly. “Willloves to go to the top of the hill down the road and take photos sometimes.”

 “Didhe go this morning?”

 Jasongrinned knowingly. “Hedid.”

Ismiled.Iwasn’t sure if it was meFelixdidn’t expect romance from, or if he wasn’t used to being romanced at all, but he was in for a surprise.Iwas going to romance the shit out of him.

Felixcame back out with the coffee, and we sat at the table on the deck, chatting withJasonabout the ranch and the animals.Alittle while laterColewandered out, wearing only pajama pants and complaining about being lonely.Heput his coffee mug on the table and climbed intoJason’slap, relaxing against his chest and shoulder.

“Anynews on the bomb?Doyou know if they have a suspect?”Jasonasked.Andjust like that the peace of the morning was gone.

Felixhunched over his coffee cup and looked at me pleadingly.Inodded. “Oneof the people they wanted to interview turned up dead last night.”

Colewas instantly wide awake and sitting up onJason’slap. “What?Werethey murdered?”

Ishrugged and ran my hand overFelix’sback.Hewas incredibly tense. “Toosoon to say. That’sall we know. We’rehoping for an update today.”

Coleshifted uneasily. “IneedWillto come back,” he toldJason. “Iknow it’s stupid, but—”

“It’snot stupid,Cole.”Jasongave him a kiss and picked up his phone.
