Rory rubbed his face. “Okay, here’s how it works. I can talk to ghosts if they’re in front of me, but I can’t call them to me if I can’t see them. It’s not like I have a ghost dog whistle or something. And if they’ve moved on to the other side, then forget it. They’re not coming back. But if they’re around, or if we can find the ghosts of friends of theirs who might know where they are, then it’s doable.”

There was another pause on the other end of the call. “Thomas Baird lived and died in Pflugerville. Would you be willing to stop there on your way to take Pia to meet the dryads?”

“If it’s on the way, sure.”

Ellis nodded. “Those dryads are in Mineral Wells, which is alittle west of Ft. Worth. We’ll just take the long way to get there.”

Pia looked relieved.

Manny interjected, “Wait, is it safe for Pia to go there? Are you sure the vampires are gone?”

“Yes,” Greg said. “They never stay in the same place. We’re hoping Thomas Baird’s ghost has information on where they went after they, uh, attacked him.”

I made sure Pia was looking the other way and I mouthed,They took his body, at Rory.

He grimaced. “Okay, that makes sense. Sure, if everyone else is on board, we can make a road trip out of it.”

CAL’S CAMPAIGN COMPENDIUM

VAMPIRE

Type: Vampire

Class: Wonder (assumed)

Overview: We have very little information about actual vampires, as they were believed worldwide to be a myth up until very recently. Only four vampires have been verified to exist, and one of those is most likely deceased. The vampires can pass for human, but they can also exhibit glowing eyes and produce fangs.

Skills:

Can move at a faster-than-human speed

Can generate or turn into fog (more data is needed to determine which)

Can manipulate another person’s memories and possibly compel behavior or thoughts

Difficult to kill. The one friendly vampire told us that cutting off a vampire’s head is the only way to make sure they “stay dead”.

Requirements: Due to the attacks that have happened over the past few decades, we are assuming vampires feed on the blood ofWonders, but we don’t have enough data to be certain. The attacks have occurred in clusters every ten or so years, so it’s possible vampires don’t need to feed all the time, or they go into some sort of hibernation between kills.
