“It’s not that bad.” I reach for it, but he stops me and takes my hand.
“I love your independence and strength, but while I’m around, it’s not necessary.”
“Are you always going to be like this?”
“Yes. I thought you would have gotten used to this, having grown up with your father.”
“I did. I just don’t want to be disappointed once the honeymoon phase ends.”
“There is no honeymoon phase for us, Princess.”
“I will see you tonight at home.”
“That you will. We have a wedding to plan.” He gently rubs my engagement ring that I love so much. I can’t believe I was so damn blind to his love. What was wrong with me?
I squeeze his strong fingers that hold mine. “Yes, but I’m sure my mother would love to be involved in all of that, as would yours.”
“The more, the merrier. As long as you’re my wife, nothing else matters, Elsa.” I arch up on my toes and kiss his lips before getting into my car. “Be careful.”
“I always am.” I smile and drive off. His parents are coming up next week to spend some time shopping for the wedding and talking plans. I love his mom. She’s so talented, and I wonder if she’ll be up to performing at our wedding. She’s a professional pianist, and his parents met at one of her shows.
I smile when I think about how much love our parents have spread to us. Miles shows me every single moment. When I get to school, I get a message from him.Stay safe, my love. I can’t wait for tonight.
Me either. I love you more.
Not possible.
I don’t even respond because I don’t have time, and I’m not going to win. He’ll probably show up here, carry me right out of class, and fuck me on the nearest isolated place. Smiling all morning, I make it through my first class and then run into my bestie.
“Girl, I love how happy you are.” She hugs me so hard.
“Thanks. Can a girl be this happy? I am spoiled.”
“Duh, but you deserve it. Now only if your hot brother would notice me, that would be great.”
“I’ll put in a good word for you.” I wink.
“Please don’t. I think I would die.”
“Ange, you are ridiculous. Have you even given him the slightest hint that you like him? You know they are clueless when it comes to things like that.”
“I know, but I’m sure he doesn’t like me, so it’s cool. Anyway, we’re going to be late. Can we catch up tomorrow and do a girls’ day?”
“I’d like that.”
“Awesome. I miss my bestie.” We hug again before going our separate ways, and I head toward my next class. There’s a sign on the front door saying to use the side entrance, so I swiftly turn around and then there’s a large explosion near the area I just left with Ange. I look back to see what’s happening and pray she’s nowhere near there, but I’m stopped by a hand to my mouth. I bite at the hand, only to feel a pinch on the skin of my arm.
“Oh my God. Let me go.” He drags me off as if I weigh nothing. Suddenly I can’t move my body, as if I’ve lost control of it. What the hell happened to me, and where is my security? I heard the commotion in the quad, but I’d been almost to the main doors of the building to my next class when it happened.
“What are you doing? Where are you taking me?” The world around me spins, and everything moves at lightning speed.
“You’ll see.”
“Oh my God, it’s you.”
I haven’t seen him since I ran away two years ago, but he looks so different. It’s like he’s done something to his face. “Yes it’s me. I look a little different, don’t I?” I don’t say anything, but my silence is all he needs to continue. “You have your fuckingfilthy-ass brother to thank for that. I should give you what you deserve, but just looking at you makes me fucking sick.”
He makes a gagging sound, then clears his throat. “I want to destroy your entire family. Killing you would accomplish that nicely, but I wouldn’t get enough joy out of that. I want you to witness their deaths before you die.” He tries to laugh maniacally, but it comes out weakly because his voice cracks. I don’t know what the hell happened to him, but he clearly is messed up and he wants his revenge.
