The doorknob stops moving, and I blow out a relieved breath.
We sit in silence, waiting, and then a flash of light beams through the windshield. Oh God. They’re going to see us sitting here and put me in cuffs.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
All for oral.
Really good oral.
Still, I’m never going to hear the end of this. As soon as my parents are called, my brothers, Magnolia, and everyone in Sugarland Creek will hear what I did.
And worse, my clients might find out too.
Who’s going to hire a horse trainer with a criminal record?
“Anyone in there?” a man calls out, and when the light beams across my face, my heart sinks into my stomach.
Here we go.
“Don’t. Move,” Fisher warns in a voice so low, I almost don’t hear him.
Everything around me disappears as I try to sit as still as possible.
The bright flashlight dances around the truck, and I hold my breath until it finally goes dark again.
After a few silent minutes, I exhale.
“I think he left,” I say.
“We should go.” Fisher stands, holding out his hand for me. When I take it and get to my feet, I fix my dress, smooth my hair, and grab my bag.
“Do ya think we messed up anythin’ in here?” I quickly look around. Nothing seems out of place, but there’s not much time to consider that.
“Looks fine to me. C’mon.” Fisher unlocks the door and holds it open for me to step out.
As soon as I do, a light blinds me.
Fuck.
ChapterFour
Fisher
The door slams behind me, and Noah freezes when a guard stands in front of us with his flashlight in our faces.
“Think ya can lower that?” There’s no need to fucking blind us.
Once he does, I see a scrawny kid no older than my son.
“Noah...” The guy laughs, and my heart pounds harder than before.
This guy knows her?
“Ian?” She steps toward him, and he beams a familiar grin that immediately pisses me off. “You asshole! You scared me to death!”
He laughs as Noah playfully smacks his arm, and he tries to pull her into a hug, but she retreats before he can.
“I saw it was you and knew you had to come out eventually.” He shrugs, wearing a smug smile as he puts away his flashlight. “Magnolia called when she couldn’t get ahold of you, and I told her I’d go look for ya.”
