Spook sucked in an uneasy breath, as Alle gazed up at him with liquid, sultry eyes.He was doing his best to exist in the moment, and not allow his past to intrude. It was taking every bit of his concentration.Every tiny molecule.Even so, he still had the shakes.

It’s just nerves. That’s all.And it might as well have been purely that.It was a lifetime ago that he’d last sunk into the heat of a woman’s body.

A decade.Afuckingdecade.Of course he was nervous.Ten whole years of holding out and never letting anything progress beyond the point of no return. That was no longer an option, not if he wanted to keep the woman he loved. Not post-Xane.

He just wished it wasn’t so fucking terrifying.

He sucked in a tight breath. His lungs were burning.Every muscle he possessed seemed to have tensed.Turning away or running from this were no longer options. This couldn’t be entirely about him anymore. He’d let her down, and there was a price associated with that. This was it.Taking a chance.Trusting her.Believing in her, and in himself.

Alle’s eyes were bright and wide, still shiny from the tears she’d recently spilled. There was only one way forward. One means of removing the invisible barrier he’d erected between them.He had to prove that Xane wasn’t the only person he could let his guard down around. He had to join them together.Literally.And figuratively.

He was all fingers and thumbs as he moved into position. The very first time he’d had sex he hadn’t been as nervous as this. His ribs were aching.Breathing had turned into a conscious act.Had his lungs shrunk? He couldn’t seem to swallow enough oxygen to combat his light-headedness.

Please don’t move. Please don’t move.He bit back the demand.Every slight shift she made, he was electrifyingly aware of.It was killing him. They were so close together.Only a single step away from being joined.

“Spook,” she whispered.“We really don’t have to.”

Yes, they bloody well did.

Besides, he could do this.He could.Definitely.Do.This.No question about it.

Beneath him, her body was liquid and soft—enticing in all the right ways.It was hardly a hardship to allow himself to be lured.

Ignoring what felt disturbingly like something tearing inside his mind, and disregarding the strain in his muscles and the prickles racing up and down his spine, Spook lodged the crown of his cock inside her.

Jeezus!

They both groaned in unison.

Alle fought against the grip he had on her wrists, but he held her tight. He couldn’t have her touch him.Not yet.

“More?”His voice quaked.

She nodded, mouth open, little huff-like pants escaping.“Every inch.Right to the root.”

If he did that his goddamned mind would fray.

It was hyperbole, of course.Once he got set upon the path, one inch easily became two, then three, then he was surrounded by wet heat and she was gripping him, and he wasn’t capable of thinking about anything besides how much he ached for more.

Holy fucking shit!

Alle was still fighting his grip, and he hadn’t the strength to resist anymore. His fingers uncurled, and her arms wrapped around him.One hand clamped fast across his back, the other wound upwards into his hair.

“It’s okay,” she murmured, raining kisses onto his face.“You’re okay.I’ve got you.”

Anyone would think he were the one impaled, not the other way around. He couldn’t breathe. The wherewithal of accomplishing that had vanished. His pulse pounded hard in his temples, drowning out every other sound.

It was brutal, the silence of it.The way everything was wound tighter and tighter until his whole body throbbed.

Alle groaned beneath him.Her breath streamed through her teeth in a long stuttering hiss.It seemed to function as a reminder.Breathe.He had to breathe.

“You’ve surpassed your forty-five second target.”

She startled a laugh out of him.

Oh, God!
