“He’s mistaken me for someone else. I don’t know him.” Elizabeth’s voice was cold, but it was obvious she was flustered. Laura gave Dahlia a wave before climbing back into her truck.

“Is she driving all the way back tonight?”

“No,” Elizabeth said, ruefully. “She’s spending the night at my place. After I drop you off, I’m meeting her for dinner.” Her eyes flew up. “Unless you’d rather I wait and give you a ride to the hotel. I don’t have any experience with criminal law, but I’m happy to be there for moral support. The bodyguard over thereis supposed to follow us.” She jerked her thumb to where Brady stood by his truck, his eyes scanning the parking lot while he waited.

“No, I’ll be okay. I’m hoping it won’t take very long.”

On the way to the police station, Elizabeth updated her on her new publicist. “The press release did its job. I don’t normally do this part, but until you’re settled with your new team, I’m happy to be the point of contact. I sent a cease and desist to Victor, but he’s not giving up yet.”

Dahlia nodded and bit her lip. “I’m not surprised.”

“He sent over a nonsensical letter claiming he’s going to sue, but he doesn’t have a legal leg to stand on.” Elizabeth looked sideways at Dahlia. “I don’t mean to pry. You let on there were some concerns as to things he might share. I made it clear to him we will sue for slander if he says anything about you.”

“Thank you.” Dahlia thought of the text she sent her former agent from the truck.

I know Scott is dead, and I know you’ve been stealing the money. I’ll stay quiet if you do.

Victor hadn’t answered, and Dahlia wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.

James was waiting for her in front of the police station. Looking into James’s face, Dahlia felt a bittersweet tug. He looked so much like Luke. A traitorous part of her wished Luke was there.

Brady walked with them into the building, his head on a swivel, and it hit Dahlia that she wasn’t completely safe yet.

Catching her observation, James put his hand on her elbow. “It’s just a precaution. There’s no sign that Hank is working with anyone else. Once you identify him as one of the men that night, they’ll be able to charge him. Coupled with the attempts on your life, it’s highly doubtful he’ll be granted bail.”

“I’ll wait down here,” Brady said, once they were in the lobby.

James pressed the button for the elevator. He shifted on his feet, looking uneasy.

“Luke told me about your husband.”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“My brother can be a frustrating ass—he always thinks he’s right—but his intentions are good.”

Dahlia kept her lips pressed together. “He shouldn’t have done it.” She turned to face James. “Particularly when I told him not to. But it doesn’t matter anymore.”

James frowned. “I thought that maybe you and he…”

“He told you about that?” Her cheeks heated.

“No,” James drawled. “But I know my brother and—”

“I know all about his two-week rule.” Dahlia wanted to fall through the floor. Wasn’t it enough she was having to face Hank and testify tomorrow? Now, Luke’stwinbrother wanted to discuss their relationship. It was too much!

The doors opened, and Dahlia stepped in, trying to keep her temper under control.

“That’s not what I meant. I mean, yeah, he’s got a bit of a reputation but—”

Dahlia pinned James with a stare. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

James’s shoulders slumped. “Well, for what it’s worth, I’m sorry. He’s always acted without thinking about the consequences. He shouldn’t have dragged you, a client, down with him.”

“He didn’t drag me anywhere!” The words burst out of her before she could help herself. “I made a choice, just like he did. He’s not nearly as reckless as you’re making him out to be.”

When James’s lips twitched, Dahlia realized she had walked right into the trap he’d laid with his words. She folded her arms across her chest. “Asshole.”

James’s lips spread. “Sometimes,” he conceded.
