“Skye! My friend? The makeup artist who hired me—I swear none of you listen to anything I say!”

“Uh, correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t you keeping a lot of stuff from us this spring?”

“Whatever. Look, the point is I think Lia is really nice, and she has a bunch of press to do promoting the movie. From what Skye said, Lia just being there was technically a crime. Matt had the studio lawyer show up at the police station for her last night, but he’s going to be looking out for Matt not Lia.”

“Matt? Crawford? Forget it. We don’t need to be connected with him right now.”

“Why? Has something happened?”

Shit!“No, the more distance between us and that whole family, the better.”

“I understand, but it has nothing to do with Matt. Luke, Skye says Lia needs help. She doesn’t have anyone. If something were to happen, you know Matt will throw her to the wolves even if she hasn’t done anything.”

Luke pinched the bridge of his nose. “Cara—”

“Please. For me?”

He blew out a heavy breath. “I’ll talk to James. Maybe he can handle it for you. I don’t have any interest in babysitting some vapid starlet so she doesn’t say something to implicate herself in an interview.”

“I knew you’d help!” Cara squealed happily.

“You owe me.”

“Well, technically I’ll owe James, but okay.”

Luke grunted. “What’s her number?”

“Don’t worry. I gave yours to Skye, and Lia will call.”

“Cara!”

“Got to go. Wes is waiting for me to go snorkeling.”

Cara hung up before he had a chance to say anything else. It wouldn’t make a difference. His sister so rarely asked him foranything, she knew he’d do it for her. However, this seemed like the perfect case to punt to his new partner.

With that thought in mind, he walked down the hall to James’s office.

“We’ve got a potential new case.”

James arched an eyebrow.

“A friend of Cara’s, some movie star she’s friends with, was some place she shouldn’t have been. She might call us for legal counsel.’

“That’s all you’ve got?” James squinted.

“That shooting in Druid Hills yesterday… She’s involved. Not the shooting part. Possibility that there was illegal gambling there. Cara wants to make sure the woman doesn’t incriminate herself with all the press she has to do for this new movie.” Luke leaned against the doorframe and crossed one foot over his ankle. “There’s a bonus, though.”

“What’s that?” James asked wryly. Luke tried to hide his grin. His brother was as unexcited as Luke had been about the case.

“Matt Crawford is involved. And if she hires us, we have the potential to rattle his cage.”

“I’m not sure that’s a good thing. That could be an unnecessary risk.” James frowned.

“Maybe not. We don’t know how involved he is. But it might give us some leverage.”

“Did you talk to Broughton Township?” James quirked a brow.

“They haven’t reached out yet. I called, pretending to be a reporter. They suspect it was an intentional fire.”
