She shakes her head. “There may be a few there, hiding underground or trying to leave the city. Some might even be working towards intel. But they could all be dead.”

I turn away from the table, gripping my hair and tugging on it. This is a disaster. Did I let them get the jump on me because I was distracted by Kirralee? Yes, probably. This looks like a very targeted assault though and there’s no way I could have predicted these moves.

“Okay.” I walk over to the map and start stabbing at it, marking locations. “Send these maps to your phones. I want to strengthen those centers which are still hours. How are they holding out?”

“Just barely.” Zelena says.

“Okay. Get troops out there. Hold what we have and support any wounded. I want patrols around every single business we own. Have you called in every single fire dragon we have?”

“Yes Rastus. A few thousand.” Zelena is clearly on task with this and after its all done, I’ll promote her. She could even do my job.

“Excellent. Keep our people together. Teams of three minimum. Are they still moving on our locations?”

“Yes, they are. The sun is coming up soon and they don’t seem to care. They tore apart a café here, just a few streets away from us. The proprietor was setting up for the morning and three ice dragons broke in and killed him. They used their powers as well as brute strength and people saw it. We were lucky no one got footage.” Zelena delivers the news with an even tone and calm expression.

“Fuck me.” I keep staring at the map, looking at the two colors warring across the screen. “They are really doing it.”

Silence falls for a second and everyone looks at their phones and paperwork. Zelena takes call and starts snapping loudly through the phone. Three other calls come in at around the same time and people around the table start yelling into their devices.

“What’s happening!” I yell at them all.

“Moving sir.” Zelena barks over the din. “We are holding. Positions are strengthening just as you ordered. But they are attacking.”

“It will be full daylight soon!”

“They don’t seem to care, sir.”

“Fuck!” From the look of the blinking lights on our map, they planned to overtake us by dawn.

“They could never take Casino Flame.” I mutter to myself. This building is reinforced and it is full of fire shifters. No matter what their plan, they couldn’t have believed they would take our castle. I can’t figure out what their goal is. Unless they just want to kill us all.

“Okay.” Its clear by the map, the one thing we need is numbers. I can’t believe they hit us so hard in just a couple of hours! It must be a very well-planned attack. I wait a moment for the commotion to die down as everyone in the room takes reports from our sectors.

“Zelena, I need you to contact home base and send in as many dragons as they can spare.”

“Sir?”

“You heard me. Contact the mountain.”

“The majority of those on the mountain aren’t urban trained.”

“No, they’re not, but I want you to put them in the desert. Scatter them between outposts B, C and F. There are supplies at those locations.”

“Okay.” She swiftly brings up a map and checks out everything I’ve said, getting ready to call the elders. “What’s the plan boss?”

I stare at the Vegas map. They keep taking territory and we keep fighting back but they are making a dent in us for sure.

“I want you to assemble our forces at those desert locations. Make sure part of the force is fully visible. No dragon can resist a large group of enemies that is exposed in an open area. They will attack us.

“Do we prepare for full battle, sir?” Zelena asks quietly.

“Yes, Zelena. Prepare for a full battle. Keep monitoring everything just as you are. Reinforce lines where you can. Get those mountain dragons coming in. The ice dragons should start to head out that way to scout. We need to pull them out of the city.”

“Where are you going, Rastus?”

I finish my coffee and put the cup down.

“I’m going out to help a few nearby dragons. I won’t be long.”
