“And you will answer them all,” I say with a serious scowl no matter how relieved I am to see her.

“I’m here because I saw ice dragons flying toward the city and thought to warn you. I also wanted to see if you’re all still alright. It seems like you are.”

“Besides being trapped here.” I shrug. “I guess you can say we’re doing fine.”

She smacks me on the shoulder before she says, “The clan found an old settlement of tunnels within the forest. We’ve repopulated it and made dwellings. We have a new home and we’re all safe.”

“Thank the dragon gods. That’s the first good news I’ve heard all day.” I truly am pleased. At least I don’t have to worry about them anymore.

Sapphire moves on to my last question by saying, “I found you because I was honing in on your energy. It looks like you’ve also tapped into the powers of Mother Earth.”

“Little good that does us now.” I drop my gaze and run my fingers through my hair. “We’re trapped here with our enemy on both sides. And from the looks of things there are more reinforcements coming.”

“That’s only because you haven’t fully tapped into all the powers,” she says with a serious expression. “If we do this right, I can teach all of you what to do and we can defeat both armies at once.”

“What are you saying?” My jaw practically drops at her words. “How is that even possible?”

“First, tell me how many fighters do we have?” she asks.

“We have two battalions,” Branson answers. “I lead one and the other is led by Arthur.”

“Good to know that you both have risen up in the ranks,” Sapphire compliments and I think I actually see Branson’s ears turn red. “Can we get word to Arthur to move his battalion where the fire clan is?”

“I believe we can do that,” Branson says. “We can also slowly move mine here where we are, Gallant.”

“It’s too risky,” I say. “We might get attacked before we’re ready.”

Sapphire’s eyes grow wide. “You? Adverse to risk? I’m surprised.”

I give her an annoyed look before I nod at Branson to do what he has been asked. In a couple of hours, we should have the full first battalion here while Arthur will be at the fire clan side of the city as well. Sapphire moves to the table with the map. I follow her.

She studies the map for a moment then she goes to the edge of the railing and addresses the men that are congregating on the main warehouse floor. “I went to our Purple Mountain today and received the answers that we need. I know that we can win this fight. The earth clan is the most powerful of all clans.”

The dragons are in awe of her, hanging on her every word. She’s like a stunning warrior queen that’s about to ride into battle with them. I wouldn’t be surprised if she does. There’s a different aura about her that’s both attractive and charismatic.

“If you will trust me, I will teach you everything that you will need to know to harness the powers of Mother Earth. I will help you call upon our ancient powers which will ultimately defeat both fire and ice. Are you with me?”

Our brethren raise their fists in the air in agreement with her. They know that we can’t all make noise because of the army that’s waiting for us just beyond. I applaud the discipline of Branson’s dragons.

Then Sapphire closes her eyes. Her bare feet are planted firmly on the ground. In seconds, I receive a jolt that surprises me but also roots me on the spot.

In what seems like seconds or maybe hours, I’m not sure, I’m filled with all the knowledge I need for the coming battle ahead. It’s as if Sapphire is using the earth to connect with all of us. From the frozen looks of the other dragons, it seems she has control of all of us.

Then, as soon as the shock comes, it recedes and leaves behind a warmth that I’ve never felt before. It comes with a confidence that I never thought was possible. All the dragons in the warehouse with us seem like they are changed.

“Did you do that for all the other dragons in the city?” I ask as I take Sapphire into my arms.

She looks into my eyes as she places her hands on my chest. “You all know now what I know. We will be able to harness the full power of the earth.”

I give her a kiss on her forehead before I say, “You better be right or we are all dead.”

Twenty-Five

Sapphire

The coordinated attack between the two earth dragon battalions begins just before dawn. Right when the night is darkest. Right when the enemy is lethargic and fighting sleep. It’s the best way for a smaller force like ours to overwhelm two larger clans.

We take them by surprise. They are unaware since they believe that a force like ours will not be arrogant enough to take on a larger army like theirs. Well, they have another thing coming. We are earth dragons.
