"Happy Halloween, Big Daddy!" Faris grinned, his eyes twinkling.
Sloane crossed his arms and scowled. "Are you out of your mind? You're lucky that she didn't kill you on instinct."
Faris' smile fell off his face as he picked up on the vibes he was getting from everyone. His eyes narrowed at Sloane. "Why are you stink-eyeing me?"
"I thought she was being attacked!" Sloane threw his hands in the air.
"Well, as you can all see, I'm just fine," I said, wanting to cool down the rapidly charging tension in the air. "It was just a Halloween prank."
Fischer made his way over to me and tucked me against his side. I leaned into his hold and inhaled, loving the way his scent calmed me.
"I don't think a banshee could scream as loud as you just did, Goldie girl," Bram commented, a smirk teasing at the corner of his mouth.
Faris tossed his head back and laughed. "It was the best thing ever! I can't believe I've been missing this my entire life." He glanced around at each of us. "Mark my words. This is going to be the best Halloween of your lives!"
We watched as he slipped the hooded mask back over his head and held his arms out wide, the deep sleeves of his black robe hanging nearly to the ground. Abruptly, he swung his right arm toward his face and vanished, a deep laughter echoing in his wake.
"Umm." I looked to my right, where a very naked Kai stood, having just shifted back into his mage form. "Does anyone else think that's" —he pointed at where Faris had been standing— "going to be a problem?"
I giggled, unable to hold it in with the adrenaline crash that was rushing through my body.
"I think it's going to be a very interesting week."
Chapter 2
Faris
My knees wouldn't stop bouncing as I sat in the front seat of the car next to my one-hundred-percent full-blooded demon lover.
I'd taken to calling him my lover because “boyfriend” didn't sound like enough. Though, technically, we were all getting married, so that made him my fiancé, but I heard Granny Bette use the term lover last week, and there was just something about the way it rolled off my tongue that left me satisfied.
Plus, Bram hated it, which made me love it more.
"For the love of Jupiter's cock, Faris." He shot me a narrowed look, his amber yellow eyes glinting as the midday sun broke through the clouds and lit them up.
"What is it, lover?" I grinned obnoxiously back at him.
Oooh, if looks could kill...
He reached out with his right hand and grabbed my thigh, pushing down enough to prevent me from bouncing my leg. "Be still."
"Bram, he's just excited," Kai piped up from the backseat, coming to my defense.
I turned in my seat and tossed him a wink. "Thank you." I looked back at Bram with an air of triumph. "How could I not be excited? Aren't you? I love surprises! And it's Halloween time, so I'm positive it has something to do with that. This was my first Halloween and I already knew this is going to be my favorite holiday."
Bram loosened his grip on my thigh but didn't remove his hand. Instead, his thumb began making small circles against the soft material of my black joggers. Damn, did I love joggers. The material, the way the hem stayed right where I wanted. Perfection. He didn't take his eyes off the road, but I didn't miss the way the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.
Damn, he was one fine specimen. Granny Bette had knitted all of us beanies since the weather turned cooler, and he was wearing his. Red wisps of his hair peeked out of the charcoal gray hat, and I found myself reaching up to adjust my own, which was deep red.
Neither one of those secret-keeping jerks so much as mumbled a word about where we were going, so I shifted my attention to taking in the scenery instead. That was fine. I had my own secrets. The entire town was covered in Halloween decor. Pumpkins, skeletons, ghosts… But I frowned as we passed The Mystical Piglet. There wasn't so much as a damned pumpkin sitting out.
"That is unacceptable! It's an outrage!" I started to unbuckle my seatbelt. I was going to have to do something about this lack of festivity immediately.
"Put your seatbelt back on. What the bloody hell are you doing?" Bram asked.
I pointed back towards the shop. "Best shop in the town, hottest witch in the town, worst Halloween decor in the town! Does that sound right to you?!"
Kai chuckled deeply. "Bro, take a breath. We're going to remedy all of that today."
