“What?” I drop my fork on my plate and wipe my face with my napkin. “Then what?”

He shrugs as he takes a bite of bacon. “I guess I’ll need to talk to my agent. She usually has something lined up. Maybe a commercial or a modeling gig.”

“But then you’ll have to leave. Right?”

“Stop. I know what you’re thinking. It’s going to be fine. As it is, we spend a lot of time on the phone already. I’ll just be a little farther away.”

I place my plate back on the table and cross my arms.

“You didn’t finish.”

“I’m not hungry anymore. I don’t want you to leave.”

He leans over and kisses my cheek. “It’ll be fine. You’re going to be swamped with the movie. I’ll fly back to visit and you can visit me. Who knows, maybe my next job will be here. Let’s not panic until I figure it out.”

He’s funny. Not panic. Ha. I’ve already run multiple scenarios in my mind, all of which involve him on the other side of the world. I stare at my laptop. I don’t want him to go. I’ve gotten so used to him being around that I took it for granted. How can I get him to stay?

My eyes focus on the word “casting call.” Instead of a lightbulb over my head, I see fireworks. Brilliant, perfect fireworks. I grab ahold of his arm.

“Fisher, you’re Penn.”

He laughs. “Thanks. I figured that out a long time ago, but it’s nice to hear you admit it.”

“No, I mean you could be Penn.”

“I could be, huh?” He places his plate on the table and leans over me, pushing me into the couch. “Does that mean you’d like to take on a different chapter? Isn’t there a shower scene?”

He kisses my neck and starts to untie my robe.

I push his chest. “No! I mean you could try out for the role of Penn. Come with me to L.A. You fit him to a T because youarehim. Oh my God, Fisher. Think of it! We could work together.”

I expect to see his face light up with excitement, but he frowns instead. “No. I don’t think so.”

“What? Why?” His head drops and I slide out from under him. “What the fuck?”

“I just don’t think it’s a good idea. We’re together and I like things how they are.”

“So you like the idea of leaving me then?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“Then why won’t you try?”

“I don’t want to get the part because I’m dating you. And besides, would you really want to watch me be Penn with a Kasey that isn’t you?”

I ponder those words. That would suck. “I guess I’d have to be an adult, wouldn’t I? If it meant you stayed here, then it would be worth it.”

He shakes his head as he picks up our plates and walks back into the kitchen.

“I can’t believe you’re saying no!” I yell, following him. “What’s the real reason? Are you trying to get away from me?”

His brows furrow. “You can’t be serious.”

“What would you think? Huh? What would you think if I had the chance to stay with you, do what I love to do, and accept a life-changing career opportunity, but instead I said no? If I said, no, Fish, I’d rather fly halfway around the world to pose for a crappy magazine layout than spend months in your bed.”

“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”

“Then why not? I’m telling you I want you to do it. To at least try.”
