“You’re gonna make it worse if you keep this up,” I warned him.
“You didn’t have to tell me your panties were wet. This is exactly what you wanted.”
Before I could offer a rebuttal, he kissed me, and I damn near melted in his arms. This man did something to me that I couldn’texplain. If I didn’t do something to slow my growing feelings, I’d be head over heels in love sooner than I was ready.
He pulled away and looked into my eyes. “I might have to sneak away more often in the middle of the day.”
“I won’t stop you.”
He kissed me once more before I began to wrap up the food I hadn’t eaten to put in my minifridge. Rowdy stopped me and wrapped his arms around me again. It felt so good being in his arms that I could spend an eternity there.
I let my head fall back and looked up at him. His eyes said something that his mouth had yet to speak, and it gave me butterflies.Or maybe you’re reading too much into this.
“Will I see you later?” he asked as he released me for the second time.
“You know where I’ll be.”
I finished putting away my food and walked him to the door. The thirty minutes I spent with Rowdy were the highlight of my day and gave me enough of a boost to power through the rest of the day. As I gathered my things to leave, Kenai appeared at my door, which was open, knocking dramatically on the doorframe.
“What is wrong with you?” I questioned, annoyed by his behavior.
“I had to make sure I knocked so you wouldn’t sic your big, bad, thug boyfriend on me.”
“Why are you here?”
“It’s Friday. Some of us are headed over to?—”
“No, thank you. Have a good weekend.”
I didn’t care who was meeting where, for what, or for how long. If Kenai was going, I didn’t want to be there.
As we closedup the shop for the evening, we got a call for a tow. Nobody volunteered to do it, so I stepped up. My uncle told me it was in a sketchy part of the city and to be aware of my surroundings at all times. I was licensed to carry, and 90 percent of the time I was carrying. This would be no different.
It was mid-September, so it was still light out. As I drove to the location the caller left, I observed how the scenery changed as I approached the west side of town. Instead of kids outside playing, they were on the corner hustling . . . literal fucking kids!
When the GPS told me I’d arrived at my destination, I was in front of a liquor store. I didn’t see anyone waiting by a vehicle, so I drove around the corner. A young lady spotted me and beganwaving me in her direction. I pulled up in front of her car and cut my engine.
As soon as I stepped out of the truck, two young niggas approached me. I didn’t even wait to see what they wanted, and before they could open their mouths, I put my hand on my waist, letting them know what was up.
“Hold up, bruh. It ain’t even like that,” one of them said, holding his hands up in surrender and taking a few steps back.
“Yeah, man. We just tryna see if you wanna hol’ sum.”
“I ain’t come here for all that. Get the fuck on,” I told them.
I kept my eye on them as they went back to their posts. While speaking to the woman in need of a tow, I kept my eyes on them, and at some point, they’d disappeared.
“Do you have someone coming to pick you up, or can I drop you somewhere?” I asked once I had the information I needed.
“My cousin should be here in a few minutes,” she told me.
“Do you want me to wait with you until your cousin arrives?”
“You don’t have to. I grew up around here, so I can handle myself.”
“Okay. I have the address to the dealership. Hopefully, they can figure out what’s wrong and it’s nothing serious. Have a good night.”
“Thank you.”
