Rocky nodded. “That sounds like something his bitch-ass would do, but it was a flat-out lie. Family means a lot to us, and had we known you were out there, we would’ve searched high and low until we found you.”
“Rocky and Russell are good people, baby. We send a lot of kids from the high school to their center for mentoring,” Noelani said.
The grudge I held against my brothers was strictly based on some shit I was told by a man who couldn’t give two shits about us. They seemed genuine, so I chose to let go of the grudge and move forward.
“My lady vouches for you, so I guess we can see where this goes.”
Noelani stepped to the side, allowing my brothers to enter my space. What was meant to be a handshake became an embrace, and surprisingly, I welcomed it.
“Welcome to the family,” Rocky said when we separated.
The nurse entered my room with my discharge papers before I could thank him, but I’d be sure to do it later.
“No rush, Mr. Noble, but you’re free to go,” the nurse said before leaving.
“Nephew, your brothers run Onyx City Mayhem. I told them what I knew about your situation hoping they’d be able to help.”
“We don’t want to overstep, but that’s what big brothers are for,” Russell offered.
“Whether you want our help or not, you got it. Do you feel up to stopping by the center before going home?” Rocky asked.
“You good with that, baby?”
“I’ll be waiting for you at home. Uncle David, don’t let him do too much, or you’ll have to deal with me,” Noelani warned.
“Aww shit! You got us on three-way again. Is Rowdy still doing okay?” Indira said when she connected.
“He’s fine and has been released.”
“Hey, Rowdy!” Talia shouted.
“He’s not with me.”
“Oh, I thought he was staying with you,” she said.
“He is, but he had to make a detour. He’s with his uncle right now.”
“Is there something you’re not telling us?” Indira asked.
“Yes, but I want to tell you face-to-face. Can y’all come over in an hour?”
“I’m at work, but this sounds serious, so I’ll take a long lunch,” Talia said.
She was an event planner and could come and go as she pleased. Indira was in the last year of an MBA program, and if she answered the phone, she probably wasn’t in class.
“It’s serious, but no one is in danger. I’m gonna go to the store to get a few things. Meet me at my place in an hour.”
“I’ll be there,” they confirmed.
I quickly ended the call before either of them asked me any questions. No one in my family knew I was pregnant except for my mother. I made her promise to let me tell everyone and she gave me a week to get it done.
Next, I called Raine and Melodie to see if they were available. They didn’t work at the spa as much since they’d had children, but that didn’t mean they weren’t busy.
“To what do we owe the honor of this call?” Raine asked sarcastically.
“Don’t be like that, sis. Every time I call either one of y’all, your kids or your husbands won’t give you five minutes of freedom.”
They laughed but they couldn’t deny it was true.
