Perhaps there was no point in lying anymore? At least, not about this. He could allow himself to tell her the truth, just for a little longer, before he enacted the final betrayal.
At last, after a silence between them which felt like an eternity, he nodded. “Yes, some things are coming back to me now. I am starting to remember more and more. I did not want to tell you… because, well, I do not know exactly.” He faltered. “I did not want you to get your hopes up, in case it stopped.”
Her face broke into a smile. “But why would it stop?” she said. “I am sure that once the doorway in your mind starts to open, then all the memories will come flooding through! Tell me, can you remember anything else?”
“I think I can remember the night that we looked at the stars,” he said. It was true; ever since that morning, the memory had been creeping up on him. “I think I can remember that sensation of waking up next to you, and looking up at the dark night sky, marveling at the skies above us. It is beginning to come back to me, slowly but surely.”
Alice leaned towards him and took his hand. “I am so glad that you can remember it, Benedict. It is such a special memory for me.”
He felt her fingers entwining around his, and he marveled at how soft her skin was. Just as he had felt that morning, he wished that things could be simple between them, that he did not have to go through with his plan.
He looked into her eyes and saw the trust there, the longing. Something in his heart lurched, and he leaned forward and kissed her, their lips meeting in a perfect moment of synchronicity.

Alice gave into his kiss immediately, and as their lips moved together, she felt that familiar burning in her loins. She knew, now, that she loved him, and that he would treat her well. She thought that tonight, perhaps, she would give him all of her.
She lay back on the blanket and he looked at her questioningly. “Alice, I may not be able to hold back this time,” he said softly, as he pulled at the tie that was holding her robe closed. The fabric fell away, leaving her breasts fully exposed. She heard his breath catching in his throat.
“Alice, you are so beautiful,” he whispered, reaching out and placing his hands on her bare skin, then beginning to caress her breasts, first gently, and then with a little more urgency.
She moaned with pleasure at the touch of his hands. She knew then that she would give him anything, do anything for him. Between her legs was damp now with desire, and she gave a little gasp as Benedict untied his breeches and pulled them down, revealing his manhood.
“I will be gentle, Alice, I promise, but it may hurt a little at first.”
She nodded, and allowed her legs to drop open. He placed his hand between them and began to massage her in the sweetest way, as if he had always known the secret of how to make her feel the most perfect pleasure imaginable.
“Oh Benedict,” she whispered. “It feels so good, I can hardly bear it.”
“I promise you, it will get better than this,” he said, then withdrew his hand and crouched in front of her.
As his member moved close to the gap between her legs, she had never felt such yearning. He began to push inside her, and she let out a gasp, as a sharp pain shot through her. But the pain was soon gone, and he began to move slowly inside her. His eyes were fixed on hers all the time, and with his hands he caressed her breasts, kneading them and teasing her nipples.
They moved together, and it felt to Alice as if their bodies fit together perfectly; like this moment had always meant to happen. The feeling of his skin against hers made her feel hot all over, burning with the passion that was building between them.
Benedict’s movements inside her gradually became faster and faster, until Alice felt that tingling sense begin to grow. She let out a cry, as a wave of pleasure like nothing she had ever known engulfed her. Her whole body trembled as the intensity of the feeling washed over her.
Benedict pushed himself deeper inside her, letting out a moan. Then he fell forward and lay on top of her, breathing heavily.
They rested together like that for a while, and Alice marveled at how good it had felt, how easily she had trusted him. She had not known that it could be like that between a man and a woman, and she felt sure that it would only get better.
He pulled away from her, and they lay together in each other’s arms. She rested her head on her chest and felt the rising and falling of his chest. Surely everything would turn out alright? How could it be otherwise?
She let herself relax as they lay together on the blanket, looking up at the sky. This moment was everything she had dreamed of, and more.
“Benedict, I love you,” she murmured, without even thinking before she spoke the words. It felt simple and natural to tell him what she was feeling.
He stirred next to her. “Alice, I feel the same,” he whispered.
She felt her heart soar in her chest. This would be the moment when everything was settled between them.
“I will speak to my father,” she said slowly. “About the theft. I am sure he will let it go. Do not worry, I will figure something out.”
Benedict sat up suddenly and stared at her. “What theft? What do you mean?”
Chapter 20
Alice suddenly felt cold and exposed, as the cool night air hit her bare skin. She sat up and pulled her robe around her, covering herself up.
