Chapter 6

Shea

The day had started so perfect, and now as she watched everyone in the room, talking and shouting over each other, it had gone to shit. Emiyah had moved by her side as Mack had made an appearance, bringing with him the special guest he mentioned earlier. They must not have been far, for he got here quickly.

She noticed for the first time that Emiyah was not instantly fawning over Mack; she could feel a cold rage coming off her and that she made a point to speak to everyone except him. She would not even look in his direction, and for the first time, she saw him sneak looks at her and wondered what the hell had happened.

Shea knew they needed to wrap this up quickly now because Roland had destroyed the only serum she’d made. The only other solution was to rush them back to her place to get them locked into the secret room she’d had created for just this type of emergency; the same one she locked herself in the first time she’d tried the serum.

When the air had crackled between them, she knew she didn’t have much time before she went into full-blown heat. Shea had been fighting her body’s natural response all day and was getting tired of listing different types of herbs in her head to keep herself from reacting to Roland’s presence.

Shea found it was getting harder to control the natural instincts of her body wanting to mate, and Roland was a finespecimen of a man that her inner wolf wanted to ride till the cows came home. She hoped that was all it was and not something else. She didn’t even want to think about it because that possibility could never happen, and she’d needed the serum to make sure of that.

Now all three of them were about to be in deep shit.Wait?

She glanced around the room; something was missing. “Emiyah, where is Adanya?”

The room suddenly quieted.

“Oh my God, that is why I came here. Roland, Adanya was supposed to come back to the house after she found my ribbon, and I suddenly got a feeling of fear and dread. I think she is in trouble.”

There were many qualities she liked about Roland, and the fact that he took what his people said to him seriously and without question warmed her heart.

As he did right now, Roland didn’t bother questioning her; he went over to his phone. “Hersh, take some of our men and go and find Adanya. She is missing. Report back to me before you act. She has more than likely been taken captive by the mystery pack waiting on the outskirts.”

She wrapped her arms around Emiyah as a new fear for her friend rose up inside of her.

“We should go and help search for her.”

“No!” Three male voices spoke up in unison.

She took a step back as Roland glared angrily at them. “You are going to stay here and explain what the hell you three were trying to do with those vials.”

Her hand went to her neck where he had squeezed it; the fear of her life draining from her made her heart race, and she was now being tightly hugged by Emiyah. The memory and the dull throb in her neck now kept her silent in fear; she didn’t want to have that reaction from him again or his father. She glanced at the king and saw anger simmering in his gaze, but his face was patient as he took in the scene before him.

“Well, if you hadn’t tried to murder my best friend, she would have told you.” Emiyah glanced at her, making sure she was all right.

Roland’s glance shifted away from Shea, and now his attention was focused solely on Emiyah, but then Fantasy spoke up. “It was to stop our heat from happening. Not to kill the king as you thought. Shea would never harm anyone.” Fantasy said coldly, eyeing him up and down.

She didn’t think Roland could get any angrier, but he did, and she found herself facing him as he shook her. First, he tried to take her breath from her, and now he was trying to shake her to death. Her ire was now rising of its own accord, and she slapped at his hands, and he glared down at her instead in response.

“Are you crazy?" He stared at her as if she were nuts. "You knew what that serum could do, and you still decided to experiment with it on yourself and your friends because of the damn heat cycle?!” He wasn’t yelling, but his voice was tight with his anger.

“It’s our bodies, and we should be able to decide if we want to be mated to someone as brood mares or have it at all. Not be at the whimsy of our own traitorous bodies and Mother Nature.” "Fantasy," he said in disdain.

Emiyah lifted her chin. “The humans have birth control, and Shea was helping us with our own. She tested it first on herself several times, and nothing happened.”

“Now you are certifiable too.” Mack muttered under his breath.

“You shut up—you walking block of ice. You perfected the art of being quiet; please continue to do that.” Emiyah hissed.

Both she and Roland were distracted for a second.

He opened his mouth, then shook his head. “What is—you know what? Never mind… This will have to wait. We have other matters to deal with right now.” And they turned when they heard another commotion coming down the hall, and one of Roland’s men had detained one of the maids that worked in the house, dragging her inside the room with the rest of them.

He looked down at her to say this wasn’t over, and she touched her throat to remind him she knew and lifted her chin.

Roland for the first time looked contrite, his gaze taking in the bruises she knew were beginning to appear, and his eyes flashed to hers for a second, and he touched it delicately, a stark contrast to what he’d done before.
