“Just Texas wildflowers. Nothing like roses, but I thought the girls could use a little color. What do you think?”

“I love them,” Cameron said as she carefully played with one of the petals. “No one’s ever given me flowers before.”

My heart kicked, and I ran my hand carefully over Cameron’s head.

“Well, now you have. Want to go put them in some water?”

“Okay! Oh, hi, Aunt Ava!” Cameron reached out and tugged at Rory’s hand before the girls ran to the kitchen and they moved out of the way for Faith and Ava to walk in.

“What are you guys doing here? I’m so confused,” Rory said as I held out my arms.

“Come here,” I ordered, and she took a step forward without even thinking, and then she blushed as Ava threw her head back and laughed.

“He’s kidnapping you, of course. And I’m here to play fun aunt. You look great, girl. I’m glad that Cameron had her way with you. Now, go. I’ve got the girls, and you guys are going to go have dinner. And have some fun.”

“What kind of fun?” Faith asked, and Ava rolled her eyes.

“Never you mind, Faith darling. Go see the girls in the kitchen. I’ll be in right after you.”

Faith ran off, and then she gave me a wink. “Be home late, I’ve got the girls. Have fun.”

“I’m very confused. I thought we were just staying in?” Rory asked as she shook her head.

“I told you, it’s time we actually leave the house more than once for a date. I’m sorry, you don’t get a choice.”

“You set all of this up?” she asked, her voice soft.

“Of course I did. Come on.” I leaned forward and took her lips with mine. And she melted into me.

Ava let out a loud sigh before she literally shoved us out the door.

“Stay out late. The girls better be asleep when you get home.” She winked, then pushed Rory’s purse into her arms, and then closed the door in our faces.

Rory just looked at the closed door and then at me before she burst out laughing.

“Okay then. It seems like we’re going out to dinner. I’m glad I put on shoes.”

“Cameron was very strict in what she was planning on doing to get you ready,” I said solemnly.

“That girl scares me, and I love her.”

“She is pretty amazing. Come on, we have reservations at Twelve Oaks, and I hear a steak calling my name.”

Rory’s eyes widened. “Twelve Oaks? We’re not going to one of the Wilder restaurants?”

“I think Kendall will be fine if we don’t use one of her places. I thought it was time for me to take you out of the Wilders’ reach and just the two of us.”

“Brooks.”

“Don’t look at me like that, or we’re not making it to dinner.”

She rolled her eyes and put her hand in mine.

“How did you accomplish all of this?”

“With a lot of help,” I said with a laugh, and I walked her to my truck, grateful that she had agreed so readily.

Because I was falling in love with Rory, and I wasn’t sure what I would do if she needed to walk away now.
