And me being sticky with the evidence of what we had been doing all week probably wasn’t the best impression.
“You almost ready?I sort of saved the eggs,” Lex called out.
“I’m sure we’ll make do,” I called back.
The doorbell rang, cutting through the moment.Knowing Lex’s family, honestly it could be anyone. My phone was back in my office, so I didn’t bother checking the readout to see who it was.
“I’ve got it,” he said, and I just shook my head at the fact that it was so easy that he could answer my door.As if he belonged here.
Because he did.
Lex had pulled on a shirt, and I frowned at the way his shoulders stiffened.
“Can I help you?”
“Mercy Caddel?”
That deep voice.I knew that deep voice.
“Lex!”I called out.
But it was too late.
Though Lex had kept the chain on the door, it wasn’t strong enough. Two men kicked it down and pushed at Lex.Lex staggered back as I moved forward and he ducked at the first fist that came at him.
“Get out of here, Mercy.Call the cops.”
“Lex!”I’d have to pass them to get to my phone, but I couldn’t just leave him like that.I had never seen Lex move so quickly, nor did I know he had any of those moves.Because he punched out, getting the first guy with a fist to his chin.
“You don’t have to make this hard. We’re just here for the money from that dumb bitch,” the second man said.“There’s no need to get your face broken.Just sit still.”
The bookies.
They’d found out where I lived.Or followed me.Or…I don’t know.I wasn’t a criminal mastermind, and I could barely think with the pounding in my head.Justin was a dead man when we got out of this.Because we would. There was no other option.
“We don’t have your money,” I screamed as Lex punched the first guy again. But now there were three of them, and Lex was severely outnumbered.
I did the first thing that I thought of and picked up the egg pan. When one guy got free of Lex and came at me, I shot out, slamming it over the man’s head.He groaned and went down to his knees.
“Get out.We have nothing for you.”
“Bitch!”He grabbed my ankle and pulled. My legs went out from beneath me, and I fell back, slamming my head to the tile.
Stars shattered behind my eyes as Lex shouted from in front of me.
There was another grunt, a scream, and I tried to scramble out of the way.But the guy had me by the ankles and was pulling me towards him.
I reached out for the pan again, but I couldn’t grip it.Instead the guy nearly on top of me slapped me hard in the face.
Blood trickled from my mouth, and I kicked out, finally connecting my knee to his groin.
“You’re a fighter.I like that.”
“Fuck you.”I turned to my stomach and tried to crawl away, even as the man reached for me again.
Even as I turned out of the way, Lex knocked a third guy to the ground but grunted as another slammed into him.
The knife slid through flesh, a knife I hadn’t seen.It was if time stood still as I watched Lex stagger back for a brief moment.Blood spurted, and I screamed.Lex, however, didn’t make a sound. He just pushed the man backward, slamming him into the wall hard enough he slithered to the floor.
