But not for long. My friends are on their way.

I pull out my phone and see a string of new messages, starting with:

Jade

I bet they’re banging right now.

The conversation moved on when I didn’t answer. There are messages swapping travel information for the morning, Sara sending us a picture of her and her daughter in her new dorm room, and Emma complaining about the hostel she has to stay in tonight because she had to scramble to book a room when she messed up her travel schedule. I type an update.

Tessa

No banging the tour guide. Luc had to work tonight, which is probably for the best.

Jade

You mean, no banging your FAKE FIANCE!

And not for the best. Lack of orgasms are never “the best.”

Tessa

I don’t think you realize how young Luc is.

Jade

There is a line of what’s acceptable and what’s not, but I highly doubt you would be attracted to a barely legal kid.

Emma

What is the line?

How young would you date, Jade?

The messages that ensue are an age gap debate. Jade insists that as we get older, a bigger age gap is fine, but I’m not so sure. Emma and Sara both balk at anyone remotely close to their kids’ age, which is fair. I do not want to date someone whose mother is my age.

Tessa

You have to have things in common with them. A guy Luc’s age probably doesn’t have much in common with women our age.

Jade

Surely you have something in common?

Tessa

He works three service jobs and I’m saving for retirement!

I can’t relate to working three jobs. I’ve never even had two.

Jade

Hence why he’s a great weekend fling prospect.

I laugh, alone at my table in Paris, and remind myself that even if I don’t have a fiancé—fake or real—at least, I have these ladies.
