Eyebrows raise. “You consulted Santo before us?” Jade gasps, mock affronted with a hand on her chest.

I fill them in on Santo’s part of the weekend.

“‘I’ll show you exactly how good it can be myself.’ Wow. That’s…wow.” Jade fans herself. “You can have an orgasm date!”

“I’m, like, ninety-five percent confident that I don’t want to go back to Bruce. But there’s five percent of me that’s like…what if it could be better than it was before?”

“It’s like Schrödinger's orgasm!” Jade crows. “Will it be better or worse? There’s only one way to find out.”

“Opening thebox?” Sara snickers.

We all giggle until Tessa gets serious again. “Bruce had twenty-three years to have great sex with you,” she says gently. “I’m not saying it wouldn’t be a little better, but there’s so much more to it than sex, right?”

“Yeah, and how much better could it be?” I ask.

“A lotbetter.” This comes from Sara, and the rest of us go quiet. Jade has an eyebrow raised, and Sara blushes. “Well, I mean, Chris is pretty good with that stuff, and I had no idea how very good it could be.”

“The man has made it pretty clear he wants to have another chance to go down on you, I think. What do you want?” Tessa asks me.

“I am very attracted to him. But he would be putting his career at risk. And I don’t know what would happen to me either. It’s not like I can walk into the offices and ask without raising suspicions.”

“Santo is responsible for his own decisions,” Jade points out.

Tessa chimes in. “I’m more worried about you, sweetie. You ran out last time because you weren’t comfortable. I don’t want you to put yourself in a situation that you don’t actually want just to spite Bruce.”

“But this time, it’ll be different,” Jade argues. “Emma can be better prepared. Showered, shaved, whatever she wants. And it’s premeditated, not a spur-of-the-moment thing. I think it’s a good move.”

“It could be risky for my career, too. What if the school or my classmates found out I was sleeping with a professor?”

“That’s true. You’d have to be really careful,” Jade says. “Sneak around. Lies of omissions, white lies, straight up lies. But you live down the hall from each other. Easy access.” She taps her chin with a finger. “It’s kind of hot, actually.”

I roll my eyes. “Is there anything that doesn't turn you on?”

“Would you like to compare Yes, No, Maybe lists, babe?”

“I don’t even know what that is.”

Jade proceeds to give us a lesson in safe kink practices, and two minutes after we hang up the call, she sends us a PDF of her favorite list “just in case.”

I’m still not sure what I’m going to do about Santo. It’s not like me to do any of this—one-night stands or forbidden hookups.

But maybe that’s a good thing.

Santo

The wordsI threw out haunt me. They were honest—too honest—but Emma and I pretend they didn’t happen.

For my part, it was a totally inappropriate thing to say to a student.

Emma, though, is hard to read, but I suspect she doesn’t believe me—or believe in herself.

She’s out of town once again over the weekend, and so are Eva and Oliver, so I have a weekend playing football, working, and jacking off while having inappropriate thoughts about one of my students. But I’m also waiting, anticipating her return home, and wondering if she’ll take up my offer.

She does not come by Sunday after she returns.

Monday, I don’t see her until my lecture, and I’m sidelined afterward by another student’s questions.
