Chapter Eighteen
Memphis
Iheard Sal ask if she wanted to come on the show. I want her to. And then again, I don’t. I don’t know what I would do if I had to hear those girls talk shit to her. She’s the most genuine person I know. And I want to choose her, to show her I made a mistake and how sorry I am.
I head back to the house and for the first time I’m just content. I don’t need sex or a blow job. And Ever did that for me. She was always a calming presence in my life.
I can only hope she joins the show. It would piss the others off, but I don’t care. I want her.
This is my life, my heart they’re trying to catch. If they want a chance, they’ll leave it alone and just keep on trucking. But they can’t hold a candle to the woman that is Ever.
She doesn’t even think she’s worthy. She was always worthy, even before the accident. It was me who needed to get knocked around by a horse named Turbo to see how wrong I was in all of this.
I strip and crawl in bed, turning off the light and wishing the girl next door was in my arms. With that thought, by the time I close my eyes, I’m out like a light. And for the first time in a long time, I actually sleep.
I’m up before my alarm, showered and dressed, and I head downstairs to see if anyone else is awake.
Shane and Ever are up. I stick to the wall, eavesdropping like a creeper.
“Sweetheart, it doesn’t hurt to try. I agree with Sal, this could be good for you. Maybe see something other than Georgia.”
“Are you okay with me doing it?”
“We all talked about it and you deserve some happiness. If you don’t find it with Memphis, maybe Sal will get you some good guys to sort through.”
That kind of makes me mad. I don’t want her to look at anyone else. Fuck, this sucks. She needs to be with me. Only me. I have no idea where this possessiveness came from, but I need Ever. I miss her.
“Morning.” I paste a smile on my face. “Anything I can help with?”
“I think we’re good,” Ivy says as she pours everyone coffee.
“You’re up early,” Ever states.
“Best sleep ever,” I say. “And no, it’s not what you think.” Ever blushes. That color looks good on her. Oh, I know she saw me with Rachel that first night. It might have been dark, but I know she saw us.
“Breakfast will be set out in a minute.” I nod at Austin and wave a finger at Ever.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?”
She nods and follows me out to the hallway. “I hope that you consider doing the show.”
She just stares at me.
“Sometimes we have to take chances. I want the chance to show you that I’m sorry,” I say. She simply nods.
“I’ll think about it,” she says quietly before going back to the kitchen. I stare at the wall she just occupied and glance at the old photographs in picture frames. A young Ever. Ones with her and me. Ones of both our families.
“She used to barrel race until high school. When she gained weight, she stopped. She was really good,” Linc says from behind me.
“I know.”
“You act like you don’t. It’s like you hardly know her at all.”
“I was a dick.”
“Still are. I don’t think she should do your show. I don’t want the others to figure out her past and bully her for it,” he snaps.
I spin around. “You think I would let that happen?”
