Anne likes a few daytime talk shows. I never took notice until I heard that. I plop down on the couch to listen to what he has to say. Something told me I should watch, even though I shouldn’t care.
“Memphis, thanks for coming on today.”
“Thanks for having me.”
“First of all, lovedChicken Fried Love.”
“Wasn’t my idea but thank you.” He looks so humble and sexy in a three-piece suit.
“Tell us about your new show. What made you think to do this?”
He pauses and I feel myself sit up straighter.
“A long time ago— okay, like five years ago to be more exact— I did something stupid. I was the direct cause of someone I love getting hurt in an accident. She spent several months, close to a year, in the hospital. And like the jerk I was, I never apologized or confessed to it. What did I do? I went on to live my dreams, make them real. I made millions while her family struggled to make ends meet and pay off her hospital bills. And then when my marriage went south, I became a person I despised. I hurt a lot of people all because I thought I was the real deal. I want her to know that I’m sorry. I love her, and I hope someday she can forgive me. The show is me trying to make people’s lives better, specifically the people I’ve wronged. I’ll be letting people take me on in the ring, defend the honor of their loved one, as well as gifting these people with things that they have wanted or need and apologizing profusely. People can change and I will show her that I have.”
“I see. How do you know she’s watching right now?”
“I don’t, but hopefully this will get back to her.”
“Does this woman have a name?”
“She does, but I don’t want her to be harassed so I’ll keep that private.”
“I hope the show is a hit, pun intended,” the host says as they go to break.
“Wow,” I huff out.
“Will you watch?”
“I don’t know. If I do, I will think about everything I’ve ever done for him that he never thanked me for, and some of those things he used to impress others. I just want to forget.”
“I understand.” She goes back to her shows.
I decide to take a walk. I find myself wandering through the trees, taking in the peaceful beauty. The one thing I loved about this property is right in front of me, the pond that no one knows about. I used to come here, just to sit and listen to the water lap against the sides.
I sit in silence, only the wind as my companion, letting Memphis and everything in the past fly away in the breeze.
Chapter Thirty-Two
Memphis
I’m not even sweating as this guy tries to beat on me. I dodge a few punches, have to make it look good. I give him a few gut checks. But his hits to the face feel like love taps. This is what I signed up for.
“Time.” And that’s the end of the match.
I shake the guy’s hand. Evan is his name and he’s Sasha’s new boyfriend.
“Just so you know, she never held any resentment toward you. And I have to thank you. You let her go. She flew home that night and like a scene out of a movie, she walked into my life.”
“Cheesy,” I snort.
“Don’t lie, Evan. I was stomping through the airport and tried to take his cab. We argued and ended up sharing it. He found me the next day because I left my phone in the taxi.”
“I am sorry, Sasha. You deserved better than me.” All this making amends makes my chest lighter.
“Ever is a nice girl and I was rude to her, so when you finally get her back, I’d like to say I’m sorry.”
“I’ll let you know.”
