I can hear people yelling at Memphis to hit or jab. I can hear others yelling at Brick. Ariel has never seen Brick fight, so she’s almost gnawing off her nails.

I want to put Ariel out of her misery. I know Memphis will be mad about this, but he will get over it. I yell to Memphis, and when I think he’s looking, I flash him.

His jaw drops and that’s when it’s lights out for him. Brick slams his fist into his face and Memphis goes down. I’ll make it up to him.

“That was cold,” Linc snorts.

“Just being a good friend,” I say as everyone starts laughing.

“Let’s go see if he’s okay so we can go get something to eat,” Natalie says between giggles.

Brick lets us in and I rush over, taking Memphis’s hand.

“Oh look, it’s my angel,” Memphis says, grinning. Yeah, he’s okay.

“Yep.”

“Never do that again,” he scolds me.

“Never. I’ll make it up to you,” I respond and wink at him.

“Good. I’m starving right now.”

“You and Brick go change.” I help him up, kissing him before sending him off.

“You guys are so cute.”

Ivy and my dad join us to get food. We drive back to Hickory and head to the diner. The whole town joins us, one big BBQ fun night. Tables have been set out, several grills going, lots of dishes of food.

“I think you did good, son,” Memphis’s mom says, stealing one of my fries before I bat her hand away. She makes up for it by setting some of her sweet tea in front of me.

“Thank you.” I quickly take a sip. I love her tea.

“Be good to each other and be at the house on Sunday for dinner.” She walks off to talk to Skye’s mom and others.

“Still bossy as ever,” he says, laughing.

“Aren’t most parents?”

He just nods.

We walk around, talking to people, shaking hands. I even laugh a little with Skye. She is going to be working at her brother’s bar. It’s small, but cozy, And I think it will be good for her. It’s either the bar or the creamery. I think she would be bored at the creamery. At least with the bar, she’ll have people coming in and they’ll stay awhile.

We sit down on a bench to watch the fireworks that the mayor splurged for.

“You having a good time?” Memphis pulls me close, pushing some hair behind my ears and tipping my face up to look at him.

“Always.” I will always have a good time when I’m with Memphis.

“You look pretty today,” he says and I blush.

He leans in to kiss me, and I swear the planets fall out of the sky and light on fire. This man can kiss.

He lets me go, both of us breathing hard. “I love you.”

“Ditto.” I chuckle.

We watch the fireworks with all the people that mean something to me, to us, and there is no place I’d rather be. I’m home.
