“Skye, what do you do?” he asks as we walk away. Guess he doesn’t watch TV.

“She ruins lives,” Shelley hollers across the tent.

I turn red, and I really want to say something, but I’m not her anymore.

Being inside the car brings quiet. I like quiet.

“You are tense,” Zack comments.

“It comes with the territory,” I reply as the car drives along and we end up at Beau’s bar.

“This place looks cozy,” Zack says. I laugh. Cozy is not a word I would use to describe this place.

“I hear the steaks are good,” I say as I walk up the steps to the door. He follows.

The bar looks the same. Somehow, I was wishing Beau would change it back. The hula hoop is still hanging up.

“I kind of like the vibe,” he says as we sit. The vibe is horrible. I didn’t think Zack and I were a great fit, but now I know for sure. I just picked him to piss off Linc. Stupid mistake.

“Here you guys go,” Beau sets down two plates of steaks, potatoes, and green beans, and two glasses of sweet tea.

“Thank you. Looks good,” I say and Beau winks.

“Are these vegetables organic?” And here we go.

“I’m sorry,” Beau says.

“Are they organic?”

I can see the wheels turning in Beau’s head and I’m sure he wants to blow a gasket.

“Don’t know what you mean,” Beau says.

“It’s a question. Are these organic vegetables?”

“Look, buddy, it’s a free meal. Eat up,” Beau replies as he walks away. I don’t know if they are or not, but Beau takes pride in all his dishes.

“Still so yummy,” I shovel food in. I’m hungry and not wanting to talk about vegetable choices.

Zack just shrugs and digs in, agreeing that everything is good, organic or not. Definitely not my type.

We head back to the tables and find the girls arguing.

“Oh look, the bitch is back,” Shelley hisses as I sit down at my booth.

“You’re just jealous none of the guys will pick you,” Mallory chuckles.

“I’ll be the first to be picked,” Shelley sneers. I hope she isn’t. I think Shelley is going home tonight.

“You never answered my question from earlier,” Zack taps my elbow.

“What question?”

“What do you do for a living?” Oh yeah, that question. I kind of avoided it, especially since Shelley knows a lot about me.

“I work at a creamery,” which is true, I just leave out the part where my family owns it and I live here. Oh, and I leave out that I work at the bar we were just at and that Beau is my brother.

“Nice.”
