“Linc?”
“I fucking love you,” and he kisses me again. I love this man and I hope that I have proven I would do anything for him, for us, for our baby.
“Let’s celebrate,” I say as I finish changing and open the door to the others who congratulate us. They don’t know I’m pregnant yet.
“I want to thank everyone for helping out today and making this happen. I really appreciate it. We do have another announcement. I’m not sorry I kept this from any of you and you’ll understand why. I wanted Linc to know first,” I beam at him as he jumps up in a chair and announces the news.
“I’m going to be a dad,” Linc yells and the whole crowd erupts.
“You sneak,” Ever comes over to sit by me.
“I wanted him to know first,” I admit.
“We understand.” Memphis hands her a plate and sits down.
“Congrats to both of you,” he says to me.
“I think I need to clear the air,” I start once the whole groups is sitting, but this is mainly to Memphis.
“I’m listening,” he pulls his chair closer to the table and leans in.
“I was pregnant, but you didn’t know that and I would have told you, eventually,” I tell Memphis.
“Was it mine?” he asks and I shake my head no.
“It was Linc’s?” he asks and I nod, confirming what everyone probably already suspected.
“What happened?” Ever asks softly. And then the freight train hits me.
Everything comes rushing back, the memory of what happened, and now I know how I knew Kelsey and Lily. It hits me like a truck and I need to get it out. I’ve held on to this secret for a long time and I should have said something earlier.
“If you don’t want to tell us, that’s okay,” Memphis says.
“I’m ready to talk, I think. I think I need to. No, I know I need to. I met Kelsey and Lily before, but pushed them out of my head until now. They caused my accident.”
Memphis looks away for a minute.
“I know you were gone and that’s why you couldn’t come to the hospital,” I tell him to lessen his pain. None of this is his fault.
“I should have flown home the minute they called,” Memphis drops his head. I grab his hand and hold it as I tell the rest of the story. Ever and Linc don’t say anything, they understand.
“Not your fault.” I know he feels bad, but it wasn’t his fault.
“I was driving to a doctor’s appointment and approached a red light. I came to a full stop as one should and next thing I know, I’m flying through my window from someone rear-ending me. I was lying in the middle of the road in traffic and the two women were just standing there not doing anything. A truck driver pulled over and rushed out to get me and pulled me to the side of the road and called 9-1-1. I tried to tell him I was pregnant, but couldn’t I talk. The ambulance got there and the EMTs were rushing around. I watched them talk to both women as they worked on me. I know they told Lily and Kelsey they were okay and to wait for the police, but I’m not sure if they did or not. The EMT figured out I was pregnant when they collected my purse and saw the picture of the baby. They relayed that information to the others and that’s how Lily and Kelsey found out I was pregnant.”
“Why did they want to try and hurt you?” Ariel asks.
“I can answer that,” Linc steps in. “My mother isn’t my mother. And she cheated on my dad. She had both of them and because I was going to inherit money and a ranch, she told the man she slept with that she would make sure they would have access to the money by getting me to marry one of the daughters. My dad was too fucked up from alcohol to fix things. The girls would come visit and see me hang with Skye and pay no attention to them. They were there when I asked her to be my girlfriend. Crazy breeds crazy.”
“Yep,” Mason agrees.
“I hope that’s the last we hear from them,” Alexa chimes in.
“It should be,” Linc says.
“Wait. What did Lily say to you at the bar to make you leave?” Mason brings up a good point.
I sigh before I speak. I shouldn’t have let her get to me. But then again, I wouldn’t be where I am if I had just spoke the truth. Going even further back, I wouldn’t be here if I would have just left with Linc that day. Hindsight is twenty/twenty.
