“Full of yourself.” I relax. He’s easy to be around, and though I won’t tell him, yeah, he’s easy on the eyes.

“Thank you for today. I had a lot of fun.”

“My pleasure. Can you make sure to tell my brother that and rub it in a little bit?”

“Shouldn’t I wait until his date so I can compare?”

“You could, but I know mine will be better.” He takes my hand and leads me out to the truck.

I hold his hand the whole way back to Hickory, and it doesn’t feel weird at all.

“Have a good night, Timber.” He kisses my cheek.

“Goodnight, Axel.” I watch him head to his cabin, and I head to bed.

I was truthful when I said I had a good time. Maybe I’ll find happiness after all.

CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

DAYTON

I had such a good time on the date with Timber, and I know she did, too. I was proud of her that she didn’t let those two douchebags bring her down too much.

“Dayton—” she starts but then freezes. Sitting on the porch is Snow. “I’ll just go,” she says.

“Timber,” I call out, but she ignores me. I turn to look at the woman who messed up a good day. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to talk.”

“Why?”

“Because I was rude and rash at our last meeting.”

I head to cabin twenty, not wanting to take her to the loft because that’s my special place with Timber.

“I’m guessing your man dumped you.”

“He did.”

“So, I’m like your backup?” I’m trying to keep it together but can’t.

“No. I came to talk.”

“Talk.”

“You like her.” She’s talking about Timber.

“I do, and you’re messing it up.”

“Oh.”

“Talk,” I snap, and she jumps.

“I lied to you. You didn’t ruin my life. I danced for a while until Ben.”

“Why would you tell me that then?”

“Because if I hurt you with my words, you would go away.”
