I have plans for this place. The tunnels are going to be filled in. Greer talked to Jace before we left about contractors. He found one and Greer had already been in contact. I want horses and cattle. I want to build a bigger barn. Why not make it a home? Or my home. I still will keep some of my grandpa’s touches. It might be a big house, but it’s rather homey on the inside. The furniture needs an update as it looks like it belongs in the fifties. In the morning, I will be calling the school and getting Gage into online courses. He will graduate if it kills me and him. Maybe I can get him on a football team or hockey team here in Texas, he’s good at both sports, more so football. He could go to college on a scholarship, and I want that for him.

Even though a lot of bad things happened here before I was moved to wherever I was found, it doesn’t feel ominous. I feel safe for some reason. Crazy, right?

Greer grabs what little bags we have and takes them up to the door and then comes back for me. Gage grabs the wheelchair I will need to use since this house is huge and I do have to stay off my feet as much as I can. Good thing I can order online.

It’s late now and I feel bad since we didn’t eat yesterday.

“Can we order a pizza?” Gage asks as Greer sets me on the sofa.

“Yeah, the places will still be open,” I say. They won’t close till around eleven and it’s only ten at night now.

I saw Zion with that girl and knew I needed to get away. Maybe that was what pushed me out, but I think I needed one anyway. My life took a left turn when I left Cali and I don’t know what to think. Getting away is the best thing for me. Dad agreed and Greer said he would come with us to keep us safe. I was going to leave Gage, but he wouldn’t hear of it. Sawyer said he should go with me, so I gave in.

I need to heal, I need to feel stronger, both emotionally and physically. I want to get back to work but need to do these other things before then. I also need time to wrap my head around all the lies from my family and what Sawyer did to me. I don’t hate them and I’m not pushing them away, but they also agreed I need the time.

“I’ll order. Gage, do you know the address? Let your mom find something to watch,” Greer says. Gage hands me the remote and they head off to the kitchen. I flip through the channels until I find Sons of Anarchy. I know it’s a show, but maybe it will help me understand some of this. I am too soft for the club, but if I go back to Louisiana, I’ll be immersed in it and need to know what to expect.

“Fuck no,” Greer states as they come back in with beers they found in the fridge, water for Gage.

“Why?”

“This is a show, not real life.”

“I heard that some actors were actually in a club,” Gage adds.

“Find something else. I’ll tell you about the club, what I can,” he growls. I think that’s how he sounds all the time and I’m wondering if it has to do with the scar across his neck.

“Okay,” I turn on South Park and we settle in, waiting for the pizza.

“A question a day from both of you,” Greer says.

“I get to ask a question?” Gage asks and Greer nods, right as the pizza gets here.

“How do you prospect?” Gage asks and I gasp.

“Mom, it’s just a question,” Gage says.

“Only if it’s just a question,” I grumble as Greer sets the pizza down and settles in next to me, turning me so my legs are in his lap. It has to hurt since the casts are heavy, but he doesn’t say anything.

“You have to know someone in the club,” Greer starts. I tune them out as they talk. I don’t want Gage to join a club, but I might not be able to stop him when he turns 18. It’s in Gage’s blood since his grandpa and father are in one.

I finish my pizza and soon I’m asleep.

I wake up on the couch, blanket tucked around me and the smell of bacon in the air.

“Hello?” I call out since I still need help.

“Oh, you’re awake. Grandpa had stuff in the freezer that the bad people didn’t touch. I’ll get Capone,” Gage smiles at me as he runs back to the kitchen.

“Morning, little one. Want help into the shower? I went exploring and found your grandpa’s master bedroom. The bathtub is huge,” Greer smiles at me and my heart flips.

“Yeah,” I nod.

“Gage, grab your mom’s bag,” Greer calls out as he lifts me into his arms and carries me down the hall to my grandpa’s room. I knew where it was, but I fell asleep before I could tell him. Gage could have pointed it out, though.

“Gage slept on the floor next to you,” Greer chuckles.

“I hate when I say things, I’m thinking out loud,” I feel my face heat up.
