Chapter Thirty-Seven

Kane

One Month Later

After spending way too damn long in the hospital—hell, one night in that place was too many, and I’d stayed over a week—I was allowed to go home, which to Ryker, that meant to his house. I didn’t complain.

Having spent so long without him during our almost-breakup, I didn’t want to go another day without him.

Lucky for me, he felt the same. When I was released, he took me to my house to get some clothes and other small things before taking me to his. Anna and Brian had taken care of Molly during my hospital stay. Ryker would have, but the man hardly ever left my side during that week and a half. The only times he’d left had been to shower, grab more clothes, and go to work.

We’d picked Molly up on the day I’d been released, and she’d never given me so many kisses.

The downside to Ryker watching over me like a Mother Hen; however, was he had to help me do everything, including bathing. Due to the bandages, I couldn’t take a bath, so I had to shower and be careful not to do anything that would re-open the wounds.

Ryker showered with me and held me, ensuring I didn’t fall. So, I guess that part was kind of awesome.

What sucked was the fact I couldn’t fuck him while taking said shower, but it didn’t stop me from trying. Unfortunately, he shut that shit down as soon as it’d begun.

“How’s my hero doing?” Ryker asked, walking into the living room where I lay on the couch.

“Ugh. Stop calling me that,” I groaned, covering my face with a pillow. “I’m going to smother myself.”

After the shooting at Michael’s office, it had been all over the local newspapers. My face had been front and center on the first page with the headlineOfficer BecomesReal-life Superherowritten above it. In the article, they called me a hero and said I’d been in the right place at the right time.

Superhero was farfetched, but it’d been attention grabbing. Everyone in town knew my face now.

Ryker took the pillow from my grip and looked down at me. “Stop being so dramatic and take this.”

He handed me some pills and a glass of water.

Vitamins. Yay.

I’d stopped needing pain medication as I’d healed more—and I only rarely took them those days—but Ryker had started making me take vitamins since I’d been on bedrest for so long. I was allowed to move around some, but I still had to take it easy. Doctor’s—and Ryker’s—orders.

“How’s Michael doing? He went back to work yesterday, didn’t he?” I asked after swallowing the pills.

“He’s doing well, I think,” Ryker answered, taking the glass from me and setting it on the coffee table.

The gunman had been hired by the man Michael was about to prosecute. The client Ryker had co-counseled for had signed a plea deal in exchange for information on the dude above him in the drug chain, and that guy had caught wind of it and come after Michael. The shooter obviously hadn’t been expecting a cop to be at the office to stop him, because his phone had all kinds of incriminating information about the man he worked for.

An investigation had begun on him, and so far, a few other guys beneath him had been arrested and arraigned.

“I’ve been thinking,” Ryker said before carefully lifting my legs and sitting down, placing them over his lap.

“About?”

“Us,” he answered in a casual tone. Before I could worry, he smiled, showing off his fucking sexy smile and making the corners of his eyes crinkle in the way I loved. “What do you think about moving in with me?”

“I think Ihavebeen living with you. For weeks.”

His grin widened and he glided his hand up and down my left leg. “I was thinking something more permanent. You won’t need me for forever.”

“I’ll always need you,” I said, not understanding what he was getting at. “Will you stop smiling like that? You remind me of the fucking Chester cat or some shit. You’re weirding me out, Rye.”

“Cheshire cat,” he corrected. When I snorted, he blushed. “Alice in Wonderlandused to be Izzy’s favorite movie. I don’t need your Disney judgment, okay?”

“Oh, I’m totally judging you. There’s no stopping it.”
