On the drive, which took about fifteen minutes, Trigg told me about Kris’s call informing him that Mathias and he had spoken, and then Mathias had quickly driven away.

Worried, Kris followed him.

Now Trigg texted Kris we had arrived. He looked at his phone, then up at me. “Kris says he’s been keeping an eye on him. He’s had four vodkas and shows no sign of stopping.”

“Maybe I should hold back.”

Trigg frowned. “If anyone can reason with the guy, it’s you. He’s never had anyone like you before in his life.”

“It’s a free country. At least for Alphas. If he wants to drink the night away, he can.”

I was scared. Maybe Mathias didn’t want to be confronted. Maybe it would only make things worse between us. Yet I could feel the bond between us. What was there was vibrant and alive. His drunken confusion leaked through. Despair and anger and resentment. But none of it defined him. None of it was the true essence of the man who’d tucked my little Omega boy into bed, who’d placed his palm gently against my swollen belly and kissed my forehead, who’d made love to me until I saw stars.

Trigg nodded. “He can.” He put his hand on my shoulder. “But we’re also allowed to let him know we have his back.”

“You’ve been that for him, haven’t you? The guy who watches his back.”

Trigg shrugged. “He’s said and done things I don’t like, but we have an understanding.”

I nodded. “He’s your litter-mate.”

“He’s my brother.” He gripped my shoulder a little harder. “And you’re coming in with me. We’re going to meet Kris.”

“Mathias might not be ready for me to.”

“He introduced you to me. He let me take you and your little family to dinner. Mathias did not give that okay lightly. Possibly you don’t realize he’s never done that before. Never.”

My breath caught.

“He’s ready. Saber, he’s been waiting for you his whole life, don’t you see that?”

I blinked hard, feeling the hope in my chest spread. It was almost like pain.

We walked into the low-lit establishment. Some sort of jangly music played in the background, nothing I recognized. But then, I never hung out in bars. Ever. The music I was used to sang about 1-2-3s and ABCs and how to spell Bingo.

I really needed to get out more.

Trigg and I were immediately met by a tall, muscular Alpha who resembled Mathias in many ways, except instead of a dark braid holding back his long hair, his braid was blond. He was shockingly beautiful, though not as handsome as Mathias—in my humble opinion.

The blond Alpha and Trigg touched hands, exchanging slightly pained looks, then he turned to me.

“Hi. My name’s Kris. Nice to meet you.” Kris held out his hand.

I shook it, a light clasp, feeling the warmth of him, the gentleness.

“I’m Saber.”

A honeyed scent washed over me like nothing I’d ever smelled off an Alpha before. I could tell something was different about him, but had no clue beyond that instinct.

I didn’t have to ask where Mathias was. My eyes were immediately drawn to the hunched, dark Alpha at the bar, elbows on the counter, head down. I had to hold myself back from immediately rushing to him.

Kris looked from me to Trigg. “He knows I’m here. But now there’re three of us.”

“I don’t want him to think we’re ganging up on him,” Trigg said.

“As I said, he showed up in my driveway unannounced,” Kris explained. “When I came out to the car, he told me he was sorry and then drove away. He didn’t seem right, so I followed him.”

Trigg’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “He told you he was sorry?”
