I turned on the TV and put my feet up. I ignored my burning cock trying to poke its way through my kimono’s flaps. I kept my phone in my hand. Waiting. Waiting.

The pillows were soft and the couch amazingly buoyant. Like floating on water. I leaned my head back and closed my eyes.

A rap on my cabin’s front door woke me.

I jumped up and ran to the door, flinging it wide open. “Myk—” I stopped speaking when I saw who it was, my heart fluttering.

Senta, the owner of the entire island, stood on my little porch, all in black, his demeanor perfect, his dark gaze centered directly on me. If I didn’t scent the omega in him, I would have taken him for an alpha in a hot second. He exuded charisma and power.

“Elon, it is lovely to see you on this bright day. I waited to come and visit until I felt it wasn’t too early.”

“Um, no, I was up.” I wanted to ask why he was here. Instead, I invited him in.

“I just made coffee,” I said.

“I would love a cup,” he replied, making himself comfortable in my living room on the chair Mykel usually sat in.

I was a little intimidated. This was the boss man. The big guy.

I brought him a cup of fresh coffee with a spoon, sugar and cream on the saucer. I wished I could have taken credit for being such a grand host, but it was Mykel who’d laid everything out for me, including setting up the coffee maker so all I had to do was turn it toon. He made sure I was okay at all times.

At the thought of Mykel, my entire body surged with a flash of heat. Again, no sign ofheat-heat. It was just Mykel I wanted. Like he was suddenly some core source for me of all things erotic.

Senta made up his coffee and drank a few sips before returning his intense attention on me.

“I know you’re wondering why I’m here in the middle of your therapy and only on your third day as our guest here. But it is a matter I needed to bring to you. And I wanted to do so myself.”

Curious, and a little anxious, I leaned forward on the couch. My coffee sloshed dangerously close to the lip of the cup.

Seeing the severity on Senta’s face, I set my cup and saucer on the side table.

“Is it about Mykel?” My face heated. I didn’t want to think it. I didn’t want Senta to know I knew anything about Mykel’s problems.

“Yes. Mykel won’t be coming today.”

“What?” My chest felt like it was caving in. I couldn’t breathe.

“I’m sorry, Elon. It’s a sudden unexpected condition.”

“What condition?” I needed to know. I needed to go to him right away.

“I’m afraid he’s gone into rut. Completely out of his season. And I totally apologize for the inconvenience. Another therapist will be assigned to you. We will make sure you are taken care of in every way.”

“A—a rut?”

“Yes. Our alphas are on strict schedules. Everything planned ahead. It rarely happens, but sometimes cannot be avoided. We operate our transactions and therapies with the utmost care and concern for the well-being of patients first. But sometimes unplanned events occur. I hope you understand.”

“But—but I want to go to him.”

His brow gently furrowed. “I’m so sorry, but that is out of the question. You are in treatment.”

“No, you don’t understand. I need to go to him. If he’s in rut, I’m okay with that. I consent. I consent!”

Senta blinked at me. I couldn’t tell if he was sympathizing with me or annoyed. “I truly apologize, but that is not how therapy works here.” His voice remained gentle, consoling. “All our alphas are highly trained and efficient. Their ruts are taken care of off-island. That way omega heats do not disturb their cycles if they maintain their health and have their ruts taken care of in a regular and healthy fashion.”

“It’s okay, though.” I leaned forward, my hands in fists. “I’m okay with Mykel being in rut. I know what to do. I was married for five years.”

“Yes. I understand that. You are being very generous. But we can’t allow it. It’s in your contract. If an alpha surrogate goes into rut during any session with a patient, a new surrogate is immediately assigned.”
