Glancing up, I notice he’s frozen in place.

“I, is that normal?” Something in Loki’s voice raises the hairs on my neck, so I turn to give him my full attention and find his penetrating gaze already on me.

“How many are there?”

Loki seems agitated, but it isn’t causing my fight or flight to kick in.

What’s going on, Mr. Kane?

“You want me to ask her? Seriously?”

Okay, now I’m nervous.

Loki sighs, visibly unhappy, but presses a button on the phone.

“Ashton is on your social media profiles.”

The air I had been holding hostage slowly releases from my lungs in a huff.

“Hi, Ash! What? What’s the matter?” I ask, searching Loki’s eyes.

“You know what? Maybe you two had better have this conversation. Loki, call me back.”

“Don’t you dare wimp out on me,” Loki bellows, but the screen turns black. Ashton already hung up.

“What’s going on?” Oh, shit.Did Jackson create another account?

“So, he was going through your accounts and … well, it’s probably better if I just show you. Hand me your computer?”

“We aren’t supposed to go on social from here,” I tell him. My blood pressure is spiking, and my leg bounces rapidly under the table.

“I’ll use a scrambler, and we won’t be on long. He just wasn’t sure how to respond.”

“Did, did Jackson make a new account?”

His fingers pause on the keyboard, and his eyes drift closed as he sucks in air.

“Who is Jackson, Sloane?”

Damnnit. I guess not.

“It’s not important. You’re scaring me, Loki. What the hell is going on?”

Reaching across the table, he places a hand over my tapping fingers and squeezes. Then he rests our joined hands on my bouncing knee, and both fidgeting behaviors cease.

“You never have to be afraid when I’m here, Red. Never. I will protect you, I promise. You’ll need to tell me about Jackson at some point.” Turning the computer screen toward me, I’m assaulted by a barrage of dick pics.

“Ugh, seriously? You need to prepare me for that shit.” Leaning in, I realize he has opened the messages app of my Facebook author page. “If you think this is bad, you should see the Twitter account.”

“What?”

“Yeah. Is this what he didn’t know how to handle? A bunch of dicks?”

“You’re saying this is normal?”

“Well, no. It’s not normal in real life, but for my public persona, it is. It’s nothing to worry about. Most of the time, I just report and delete them.”

Ping.
