“We need to get you inside to feed,” Linkin retorted. He pushed the door open. The smells of the city filtered into the car.

Sorin stood from the vehicle and eyed the neighborhood. Humans were milling around the street. The sounds of hearts beating filled his ears. He jerked back and watched a scantily clad woman walk down the street. His chest vibrated with a deep growl. Food.

“Sorin.”

Linkin’s sharp tone grabbed his attention. He slowly turned back to the head of his security with his head in a fog.

The hunger for blood had consumed him.

The scent of humans and the rushing of their blood in their veins muddled his brain. His gaze landed on another human strolling down the street. His tongue brushed his fangs as he watched the man walk past him.

“Sorin.”

He blinked. “What?”

“Let’s get you inside and get you some blood.” Linkin rested a hand on his shoulder. “Once you get blood in you, I’ll get you another phone so you can call Athena back.”

He froze in place.

Athena.

He’d let his rage take over him; so much so he’d forgotten he’d put her on hold.

“Find me a phone now,” he growled, striding toward the door of the building.

He had to fight the thirst.

Linkin’s footsteps echoed behind him. The door to the dilapidated building opened. They walked through it and were met by a large vampire in a dark suit standing in the lobby.

The sanctuary was located beneath the earth’s surface, away from the dangerous sun rays. The lobby was the front of the building to ward off any humans accidentally stepping inside.

“Welcome, my lord,” the vampire’s deep voice greeted them. He hit the button to the elevator.

Sorin nodded, sensing Linkin coming to stand behind him. The elevator dinged, denoting its arrival. The door opened, and Sorin crossed into the car with Linkin following him. They turned, and Linkin stood in front of Sorin.

The door closed, sealing them inside.

“Thank you, Linkin, for keeping me—”

“You don’t have to thank me, Sorin. I will always have your back.” His friend glanced at him over his shoulder.

Sorin nodded and breathed in deep, trying to keep his mind clear. As soon as he fed, he would need to leave to make it to Athena’s show.

The ride lasted less than a minute before the doors opened again. Linkin walked out first, waving Sorin out.

The scent of blood greeted Sorin. He stalked past a few tables and went straight to the bar, ignoring the stares and whispers.

He leaned against the counter and met the shocked gaze of the waitress.

“AB positive,” he ordered. It was rare for a vampire like him to be seen at a sanctuary. But when problems arose at a place where vampires could do what they were born to do, he would damn well make an appearance.

“B positive,” Linkin said, resting his arms on the counter.

“Be right back.” The waitress scrambled away.

“Athena is performing tonight. I don’t want to miss it,” Sorin announced. He turned and rested back against the bar.

They paid humans handsomely to donate. The few that were aware of the supernatural could willingly provide fresh blood to vampires in private rooms. It was regulated to ensure the human wasn’t harmed at all.
