“It’s beautiful,” she gasped. She’d never been so high up before, and gazing down onto the Las Vegas skyline was an amazing sight to behold.

“It is. No matter how many times I’ve seen it, it never gets old,” Sorin said.

The cars on the streets rushed by. The tiny people walking the streets resembled ants from their altitude. She looked past the strip and took in the desert. As beautiful as the view was, there was still the question of why she was standing there beside Sorin.

“Am I being fired? Did I do something wrong?” she asked, wanting to address what was on her mind. One thing she’d been taught growing up was to never bite her tongue when it came to something on her mind.

“What? Why would you think you’re fired?” he asked, turning to her. He leaned on the railing and studied her.

The butterflies in her stomach came back under his assessment. Here he was, dressed in the finest money could buy, and she was in her cheap t-shirt and leggings.

“I mean, if I were being fired, I don’t think it would need to go up to the owner of the casino—”

“Athena, stop.”

The deep baritone of his voice had her pausing. A firm hand gripped her shoulder. She glanced down at his other hand on hers, and her heart slowed.

“You’re not being fired,” he stated.

She studied his eyes and didn’t think he was lying. Not that she was a great judge of character, but deep inside her gut, she believed him.

“Then why am I here?”

He paused before releasing her. She instantly missed the feel of his large hand. He rested against the railing and stared off into the dark sky.

“Would it be forward of me to say that after watching your performance tonight, I just had to meet you?”

Athena froze in place. She couldn’t have heard him right. He wanted to meet her?

“You’ve got to be kidding me?” She turned to face him.

He shrugged. “Why would I kid? Your voice is amazing, and I see why we hired you on.”

“Thank you.” Her cheeks warmed at the compliment. Here she was, thinking they were about to get rid of her, and the owner had just wanted to meet her? Was she dreaming?

“I’ve traveled all over the world, multiple times over, and have been entertained by world-renowned singers, actors, musicians, but I can honestly say, no one has ever captivated me the way you did tonight.”

Athena was rendered speechless. She stared at Sorin, and no words would form.

He moved closer to her, and her feet were frozen in place. She looked away and stared off into the night.

“I’m not sure what to say to that,” she confessed.

“Are you a siren, my lady?” he asked.

She gave an unladylike snort before turning to him. He was staring at her without a smile or laugh. The intensity of his gaze gave her pause.

Was he serious?

“You are asking me if I’m a mythical creature whose voice can lure men to their doom?” She raised her eyebrow at that thought. If all she had to do was sing to lure the right man to her, she would have done that a long time ago. She laughed and shook her head.

He didn’t even crack a smile.

“You do know creatures like that don’t exist, right? The movies makes it up.” She reached out and laid a hand on his forearm. She began feeling a little more relaxed.

“Ah, you’re right. Things like vampires and werewolves don’t really exist, now do they?” His lips curved up in the corner. He patted her hand with his.

He was just messing with me,she thought with a sigh of relief.
