The young girl’s shoulders slumped. Kamila would rather have the wolves barge in than hurt the witch. Kamila laid a hand on Amber’s shoulder. “Don’t worry. We’ll handle all of this.”
Maxius rotated toward his men and held up his hand. “There’s no need for violence.”
“We received word that you were abducted,” the first one bit out through clenched teeth.
“As you can see, I’m okay, Khan.” Maxius held out his hands.
His back muscles stretched out, and Kamila’s attention was drawn to them.
Goddess above, what is my problem?
She sighed and shook her head.
“But look at you—”
“I’m fine,” Maxius cut him off. He glanced over at Kamila then turned back to them. “There has been a misunderstanding.”
Kadir caught Kamila’s eye. She jerked her head for him to move so the wolves could go to their alpha. They stepped aside and allowed the men to come forward.
“I demand to know what—”
“You aren’t in any place to make demands,” Kamila announced. She stepped forward and stopped by Maxius’s side. She looked each of the three wolves in the eye. “Your alpha has been gracious enough to agree to help my coven.”
“Your coven?” The wolf with a scar on his face snickered.
“That’s enough.” Maxius’s voice cut through the air sharply.
The chill from his tone sent a shiver down Kamila’s spine. A wave of power struck them, and she knew it was his alpha waves radiating from him as a form of domination. The wolves’ eyes lowered in submission immediately.
“Hazel is dead,” he said.
Kamila flinched at the announcement.
It still didn’t feel real to her.
How could her grandmother be dead?
The room fell silent.
Kamila breathed in deeply and held her head up high.
“According to her granddaughter, wolves are the primary suspects.” Maxius turned to her.
His amber eyes drew her to him. They were mesmerizing. She had to keep her feet from moving to go to him.
What. The. Hell?
Why was she drawn to the wolf? What hold did he have over her? Kamila felt all eyes fall to her.
“There is no question that it was wolves. I saw the tracks on the ground and the bite marks and gashes left on my grandmother.” Kamila’s voice hardened.
“As you all know, Hazel and I were working on repairing the relationship between wolf and witch. We will look into this personally,” Maxius said.
The three wolves remained quiet.
Maxius faced Kamila. “Am I free to go, Kamila?” His deep voice gently stroked her name.
She met his stare. If he reneged on his promise, she would ensure all wolves paid for her grandmother’s death. There would be no stone unturned until she found those responsible.
