He knew he was the outsider, but he didn’t give a damn. He was here to keep Kamila safe and he’d fight whoever he needed to, to keep her that way.
He’d waited this long to get close to her and he’d be damned if anyone kept her from him.
If he had to, he’d fight her entire coven for the right to claim his mate.
“I told you and I will tell everyone here. Those wolves do not belong to my pack. Me and my men are here to help.”
“Didn’t you sniff out the wolves coming?” someone hollered.
Maxius was irritated, but the man made sense.
“No, the wolves were downwind from us.” He turned and met the eyes of everyone who stood by them. “But I assure you, we will catch these rogues, and I have promised your new priestess that she will serve justice to them.”
* * *
More victims were killed.
Kadir and his men had chased the other pair of wolves away, but unfortunately, two members of her coven had now passed on to the heavens.
Tarren Noel and Danica Miles.
People who didn’t deserve to die from a wolf attack.
Kamila sauntered around her bedroom of her childhood home. It was too soon for her to go through Hazel’s things. Her mother couldn’t bring herself to walk in the house. She had returned home instead with the promise to come back later.
Kadir had offered to stay at the house with her, but she’d refused. She needed to be there alone. There were too many things on her mind.
She could protect herself and, knowing her cousin, he wasn’t too far away.
Unable to sleep, she made her way to the first floor. The scent of her grandmother still remained. Just being in the house allowed her to feel closer to Hazel.
Walking to the back of the house, she entered the kitchen. She stood before the patio doors, sensing that someone or something was out there.
Unafraid, she tightened the ties of her robe and stepped out onto the patio. It was close to four in the morning, and her body was still wired from the events of the night.
Later, she would have the meeting with the council to determine what they would have to do in order to keep the members of her coven safe.
Three killings were three too many.
The air was crisp and cool. A gentle breeze blew, lifting strands of her dark hair in the air. Standing at the edge of the patio, she looked around. The moon shed a glow on the yard, but it didn’t highlight the wooded area.
A set of amber eyes appeared at the edge of the woods. Slowly, a white wolf emerged from the trees.
Kamila instantly went on alert.
As the wolf drew closer, Kamila knew without a doubt who was heading toward her.
Maxius.
His animal was beautiful.
Her feet carried her down the stairs. She padded barefoot on the grass which was thick and provided a nice cushion underneath her. She stopped in front of the massive beast and stood in awe at the beauty of his white fur. It was amazing that someone who had dark-brown skin would morph into the whitest of wolves. He would certainly stand out amongst a pack.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
The wolf closed the gap between them and butted her with his head. She glanced down and gazed into Maxius’s eyes. He pushed his nose against her and breathed in her scent. She smiled and ruffled the top of his head.
“Are you stalking me?” she asked.
