The man glanced up, and Maxius growled.
Leon Wallace.
He was the former lead enforcer for his father. Grieg Wolffang had banished the enforcer because Leon had tried to overthrow Grieg. He’d challenged for the right of alpha, and Grieg had defeated the wolf.
His father had given mercy to Leon and banished him after losing the challenge when Grieg had the right to kill him.
“What are you doing here?” Maxius growled. His muscles grew tense. His wolf howled and slammed against his stomach, trying to get out.
He had warned his father all those years ago about this wolf and had advised him that he should have killed Leon. The wolf wasn’t to be trusted, and seeing how his was scent all over Hazel, that was proof enough that Maxius had been right.
“You know this wolf?” Kamila asked, moving to his side.
“He was banished from my pack years ago,” Maxius barked out. He refused to take his eyes off the older wolf. “He hasn’t been welcome in these parts for a long time.”
“Is this how you welcome me? A passing visitor?” Leon chuckled. His tan skin was riddled with wrinkles. His long brown hair was thin with strands of gray showing. His smile disappeared as he narrowed his gaze on Kamila. He breathed in deeply. “So, you two have recently mated. Interesting.”
“She’s none of your concern,” Maxius snapped. His wolf stood at attention, ready to attack. His gums burned and stretched from his canines breaking through.
This was why he had wanted her to stay in the house.
“Shewants to know if these were the three wolves who killed my grandmother,” Kamila said, her voice deepening.
A rush of warmth spread through the air. Kamila’s anger was rising. Maxius didn’t need to look at his mate to confirm it.
These wolves didn’t know who they were up against.
“It’s funny you should ask that.” Leon’s lips curled up into a sadistic grin. He paced back and forth. The wolves standing behind him let loose low growls. “It starts off with a story.”
“I don’t have time for your bullshit stories,” Kamila cut him off. She took a step forward.
Maxius almost pitied the wolves, for they didn’t know who they were standing in front of.
He snorted. His mate was short-tempered, impatient, and bloodthirsty for revenge.
And he loved it.
“Oh, but this is one you will want to hear. I promise.” Leon held up his hands.
“Did you kill Hazel?” Kamila shouted. The fury in her voice sent the air swirling around them.
Leon growled, swinging his eyes to Maxius. “Your father took everything from me. This pack was everything to me. Now you and your mangy wolves will suffer. A war will spill out between witch and wolf,” he snarled. He focused his attention on Kamila and pointed to Maxius. “To answer your question, I had your grandmother killed because of that man and his family. I watched my wolves tear her throat out.”
“You son of a bitch,” Kamila swore.
“And now I will take everything from you, Alpha. Once you are out of the way, then I will take over the Wolffang pack.” Leon smirked. He pointed to Kamila. “Kill her.”
* * *
Kamila narrowed her gaze on the wolves. She didn’t know which one she was going to kill first.
Her grandmother died because some wolf wanted to pit wolf against witch.
Maxius dropped down beside her in his wolf form. He kicked off the last of the tattered remains of his clothing. The two black wolves rushed in her direction. Maxius’s white wolf cut them off. His body slammed into them.
They fell to the ground in a fit of snarls and growls. He was slightly larger than the two of them and he was easily taking them on.
Kamila released the flames from her. She strode forward toward Leon, fire appearing on her hands.
