The silence is killing me, so I turn my head sideways to look at him.
“You are a great little brother,” he finally tells me, sounding choked up with emotion. “We went through a lot together, didn’t we?”
“Way too much,” I agree. “And I hope that once this is all over,” I throw my hands out, encompassing the entire world, “we continue staying close like this.”
“Solid plan,” Sully agrees.
“I’ll probably call you Blake more than you’d like,” I warn him. After all, it is our father’s name, and he should wear it proudly.
“All of a sudden, it doesn’t bother me like it used to,” he smirks at me.
“It’s settled then,” I nod, then go back to the laptop. I close the folder with his name on it, and roam around to see what else I can find related to our current situation.
“Puck,” he interrupts my clicking. “Once this is over with your woman, I’m going to need your help.”
“Sure,” I agree right away. “You got a woman of your own who needs help too?” I snicker, but not really meaning it.
“Basically,” he responds in his even tone, and my eyes snap back to his. I did not expect him to say that. I don’t remember him ever having any woman related problems, so this is definitely bizarre.
“You got it, brother,” I promise. “I hope it’s nothing urgent though. I’m not sure how long this other shit is gonna take.”
“Situation is stable,” he tells me, making my eyebrows get lost in my hairline. “For now, at least.”
We both turn our heads to look when we hear footsteps down the staircase. Seconds later, Arlene Knight appears in the entryway to the living room.
“Mrs. K,” I call out. “I didn’t know you were home from the hospital. How’s the boss doing?”
She gives me a sad smile, then comes to sit with us.
“He’s not doing so well.” Her voice is thick with emotion when she tells us that. “The doctor seems to think that all he needs to do is wake up, but he hasn’t just yet.”
“Fuck,” Sully murmurs from next to me. My sentiments exactly.
“He has a breathing tube in, and they are going to leave it in until they’re sure he can breathe on his own,” she further explains.
‘How’s Becca?” The thought of her pregnant and worried about her man is getting to me. That could be me and Emily.
“She’s upset. But she’s staying strong for the baby,” Arlene says with a sad smile. She then looks right at me. “I haven’t had a chance to tell you, but congrats on the new baby, and your marriage.”
I nod in thanks. I haven’t even had time to process the events from the last few weeks, and I don’t think I can either, not until all these people are dead and buried.
In my head, I’ve been punching at Steve Proctor’s face for hours now. When I told Emily that he was dead, I just meant metaphorically. He will be dead in the true sense of the word, but I need to make him suffer for everything first.
“Wyatt will be here by morning,” Arlene continues. “He’s bringing Ali and the kids. I miss them,” she starts crying now. “He wants to talk with Jon. They are going to take Bricks and Snake out.”
Both me and Sully just nod at her. Devereaux gave us a loose blueprint of what he plans on doing with his newly found son. Apparently, his brother almost dying has brought Wyatt Knight’s killer instinct to the surface. He is out for blood.
“What’s going on?” Devereaux’s deep voice calls from next to us. The fucker is too quiet when he moves. I take him in, surprised to see him in a plain white t-shirt and pajama pants. I’ve only ever seen him wearing a suit.
“Jon,” Arlene jumps up from her seat and wraps her arms around him. “I was just talking to the boys.”
“Emily okay?” he eyes me carefully.
“Sleeping that shit off,” I sigh in response.
“She needs to see a doctor as soon as possible,” he instructs. “They need to check on the baby, too.”
“I know,” I nod. “I just need to figure out a way to get her inside the hospital undetected. She needs an ultrasound and blood work done.”
