He almost drops the tablet to the ground when he gets startled by the sound of her voice right in his ear.
“It’s not mine!”
“Uh huh,” she nods. “That’s what they all say. Right before they reveal they’ve been living a double life for years.”
His eyebrows go up in surprise. “What double life, girl? I’m always with you.”
“You weren’t with me this afternoon,” she deadpans, both hands on her hips.
“That’s cause you wanted to go out with Carrie,” he explains. “Not because I decided to get away from you.”
“Ugh, whatever.”
She looks around for a chair to sit in, but there’s none. I debate for a second if I should offer her mine, but I doubt she’d take it.
“So whose account is this?” she asks her man before glancing my way.
“Mine.” I raise my hand like I’m in school. “I just need a date for a… thing.” I was about to confess to the bet, but the look on Cal’s face warned me away from that.
She stares at the screen, her eyes growing larger by the second.
“That’s a lot of messages you got. I never got this many.”
Cal’s head snaps back to stare at her. “How many messages did you get?”
“Just yours.” She rolls her eyes at him. “Nobody else cared to. Carrie said it was my picture, that it made me look like a realtor.”
I bust out laughing at hearing that while Cal looks concerned.
“What are you even saying? That you wanted to get messages from strangers on there?”
“When did I say that, Cal?” Evie stares him down, both hands on her hips, ready for battle. “Besides, I was there to find a date. It wasn’t good for my self esteem that only one guy seemed to be interested in me. How come Ray is getting all these messages?” she points at the tablet.
They bicker back and forth while I sit and patiently wait for Cal to tell me that I am out of theHolidateshell. It all ends abruptly when Evie threatens to get her best friend involved in the conversation.
“I really don’t need her on my ass,” Cal mumbles under his breath as he hands me the tablet back.
“Is it fixed?” I about laugh at how hopeful I sound.
Cal stands up and wraps an arm around Evie in an effort to calm her down. It seems to work when she leans against him and shuts up.
“It’s better,” he tells me.
“What was the issue anyway?” Evie looks from her boyfriend to me.
“Ray was getting too many requests for dates,” he smirks at her. “And he didn’t like it.”
Evie rolls her eyes in aggravation. “I wish I had this problem with the add I posted about looking for help at the shop. Kathy is officially retired, and she is going on a cruise that Sebastian bought for her.”
“Who’s Sebastian?” I only ask to be polite, but Cal doesn’t seem happy at hearing the name, a fact that Evie enjoys.
“Sebastian Roonie is Kathy’s nephew. He plays hockey for the Sliders, and he was almost my boyfriend,” she informs me, a gleam in her eye. “Until Cal showed up like a caveman and dragged me away from him.”
This only gets them in another row of bickering, and I don’t have time for it.
“How about you two go home to hash this out?” I suggest. “Cal, I’ll call you once I hear what’s wrong with the truck. Have a good day.”
With that, I turn to my computer, hoping they got the message.
