“There’s not.”

I squeeze his hand again. “Maybe one day.”

Johnny yawns wide, his jaw pops.

“You need sleep. And can I hug you?”

Johnny gives me a tiny nod. I push to my feet. He lurches forward, and I’m buried in his arms, his chin on top of my head as he hugs me back.

“Thank you, Milton.”

Johnny smells so good, like sweet apples and rain after a storm. He squeezes me closer before letting me go. I can’t stop looking into his eyes. They’re so expressive I don’t think he could ever hide his emotions.

“Thank you for today. And for listening,” Johnny says at the same time as another yawn escapes.

“My absolute pleasure.” I can’t stop my own yawn. “We should get some sleep, shouldn’t we?”

Johnny nods. “Unfortunately my human body needs it. If I were wisp I’d never have to sleep. But I like sleep.”

“Me too.” I take his hand, and we dilly dally on our way back to my shop.

Johnny tells me that he’s been in therapy all his life. The one service he takes the Night Guard up on so as not to alarm a human therapist.

I’m glad he uses the Night Guard services. They’re here for our needs. They keep us supernaturals hidden, protected, and provide for us at no cost. Vampires in need of blood? The Night Guard has donors. Need a clean up crew for a feeding gone bad? Night Guard. Designated driver? Night Guard. No request is rejected within reason. As long as it keeps us hidden from human eyes, it’s granted.

Back to reality. It’s past noon now. I don’t want to see him go, but I don’t want to scare him either.

When he walks me up to the cafe’s door he lets me go and drives a hand through his hair. He won’t look at me. What’s changed? What’s made him so nervous again?

“I really want to kiss you,” I whisper, in case the notion scares him.

Johnny’s eyes snap to mine, and he straightens his posture. “Really?” The cutest groan falls from his lips and he relaxes. “Because I really wanna kiss you too.”

I fight my smirk as I stand on tiptoes to take his face in my hands. His pulse thumps so hard I can feel it in my grasp. “Take a deep breath, Johnny. You’re safe,” I whisper against his lips, then wait for him to make the move.

Finally, his eyes shutter closed, and he presses his lips to mine.

Soft. Like rose petals. Forgive me for the cliche, my brain is being rewired. My wonderful Johnny is kissing me.

Chapter 7

Johnny

Holy holy holy holy…

My heart thumps so loud I wonder if Milton can hear it. We’re kissing. And it’s magical. Sparks fly behind my closed eyes. Electricity sizzles through my bones. I breathe him in, and it’s the softest hint of sugar and dough and something floral. I take his face in my hands and deepen the kiss, bending to follow him when he drops from his toes. Kissing—even if it was a decade ago—never felt like this.

I whimper when we pull away.

“Was that okay?” I touch my lips, trying to savor the moment. I don’t even feel the need to burn from embarrassment. The heat running through me is pure excitement.

Milton’s beautiful face lights. “It was more than okay. It was wonderful.”

I nod, dazed. “Can we do it again?”

Milton tugs on my shirt to bring me down to claim my lips. Is this what it’s like to kiss fae or just Milton? He fists my shirt and I don’t know what to do with my hands so they dangle by my sides.

Milton pulls away first. “We could go up to my apartment and continue in private if you want? No pressure.”
