“Until Mordecai decides to attack again,” I interrupted. “And that’s another thing. I still don’t know what he did to me.”
“Well, why don’t we fix one thing we can?”
I turned a hopeful look to Rae. “What do you mean?”
“I have Alec’s heart. Why don’t we use this time where nothing else is going on to see the Witch Queen and put Alec’s heart back?”
“Yes!” I said as I jumped out of bed, suddenly filled with a sense of purpose. “I’m going to talk to him now.”
“See, now you have something to do. And then, after you’ve done that, you can tell me all about why you haven’t told me Lucifer proposed.”
I turned back to Rae and found her sitting in the bed, her arms folded, and a smirk plastered across her face. Shit, how could I have forgotten that?
“I guess I just forgot, with everything that’s been going on. To be honest, I’m not sure I’m ready to be Queen of Hell. Besides, how did you find out?”
She snorted. “Babe, he literally announced it in front of his entire court. Everyone’s heard about it. Even Michael.”
“Michael?” Realisation hit. “Oh, his brother. I don’t think he approves of me.”
“He likes that you make his brother happy. He just doesn’t trust in this whole prophecy thing.”
“And how would you know that?”
She blushed. “He told me.”
“He told you… Is there something going on between you two?”
Her blush deepened. “No.”
She was totally lying. “Girl, we have so much catching up to do, it’s criminal.”
“I’ll second that. But first, let’s sort Alec out and then maybe you two canfinallyget it on.”
I laughed as I made my way to my clothes that were piled unceremoniously on the floor. I tripped over my boot and stuck my hand out to break my fall. There was a small click as my hand hit the wall and one of the wooden panels opened.
What the Hell?
I opened the panel further and saw a screen hidden in an alcove. I flicked a glance to Rae, and she shrugged her shoulders but climbed out of bed and came to look at it over my shoulder.
“Perhaps you should turn it on,” she mused.
I reached out, pushed the button, and watched the black screen flicker to life.
“Is that the basement?” Rae asked.
“Yeah.” But why would Jasper have a monitor in the basement? I flicked through the screens and saw the familiar rooms down there. The interrogation rooms, Cassian’s sitting room, kitchen, but the final image had me shaking.
“Holy shit,” Rae muttered over my shoulder. “Is that…?”
The final screen depicted Cassian’s bedroom. But instead of being empty, there was a flash of bright white hair pacing the foot of the bed.
My entire body trembled as I realised that Jasper must have known he’d returned. Why else would he have a camera on him? How long had he been back?
My shock at the discovery quickly turned to rage. Who else knew? And why had they kept it a secret from me?
I fired a message off to the team, telling them to meet me in the common room immediately. I was going to ask some questions.
