He tightened his arms around his girl as she stiffened.

“What’s going on?” she asked. “Why are you here? Why do you want to ask me questions about Aadan?”

“I tripped a wire,” Alexa muttered.

“What?” Caren asked.

“I accidentally tipped them off that we were looking into Aadan. Fuck it, I’m sorry, Caren. I should have been more careful. They’re here because they saw we were looking into him and they wanted to know why. So they turned up here a few hours ago.”

“We had to tell them about your link to Aadan, baby,” Travis explained. “Sorry, I wouldn’t normally but apparently there’s more going on with Aadan and the General than we realized.”

“We have had an ongoing operation trying to take them down for well over a year now,” Miranda Waterford said.

“And you haven’t managed to do that yet?” she asked.

The other woman shifted around uncomfortably. “They’re secretive and well-guarded. No one knows where their compound is. Except, perhaps, you. So we have some questions.”

God,she was exhausted.

Her head was throbbing and her eyeballs felt like they were burning. All she wanted was to climb into bed and forget this day had ever happened.

“Enough,” Travis said, interrupting FBI Agent McCallum. Neither he nor Miranda seemed like bad people, but they kept asking the same questions.

And she didn’t have any other answers to give them.

“That’s enough,” Travis said. “Caren has answered your questions over and over again. Unless you have anything new to ask her, she’s done.”

“This is important,” Miranda said.

“You just asked the same question five different ways,” Alexa told them with a yawn. “Give it up, already. We all want to go home before we’re old and gray.”

“Fine, I think it’s time to call it quits,” Charles stood with a nod. “But if you think of anything else, let us know.” He left a card on Travis’s desk before they left.

“Alexa, I’m going to take you home,” Travis said as he stood with Caren in his arms

He hadn’t once let her go.

Thank God.

She didn’t think she could have gotten through this without him.

“Don’t bother, bossman,” Alexa told him. “Got a hottie waiting for me downstairs. I’m good.”

How she had any energy left, Caren had no idea.

Travis carried her downstairs to his truck. And she didn’t even bother to protest. She didn’t think she was capable of walking right now.

He settled her into his truck, pulling the seatbelt over her. “I’m sorry you had to go through that, baby.”

“It’s not your fault,” she told him. “You didn’t know that you’d attract their attention.”

“But you didn’t want me to look into him and I did anyway. I’m sorry, baby. I would have tried to keep you out of this, but they were going to keep digging to try and figure out why we were interested in the General and Aadan.”

“I get it. It’s all right,” she said. “I understand.”

He kissed the top of her head and then shut the door.

All she wanted right now was to get home and go to sleep. Tomorrow was a new day. And hopefully, it would be a better one.
