Ram clutched her waist and dropped them intothe alley where he tapped his wrist.Hey, Kole. I’ve got morenews about our humans. Not only are they using tranqs, but they arefaster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, andable to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

When he disconnected, he relayed histelepathic conversation to Denim. “What do you think?”

“Shit’s getting strange.”

“I’d say so.”

Chapter Twelve

Skyler gazed through thewindow, following the morning work traffic. The soundproofing atthe Alliance was terrific, but she still heard the gentle hum ofautomobiles below. She’d always loved the sounds and sights ofChicago, her Windy City.

More recently she learned to appreciateLucifer’s Forge in the Knife’s Edge region, the ancestral home ofher demon mate. Its red rocks, its sandy desert, breathless nights, stars which brightened the sky, sounds of animals as they scurriedaround the sagebrush, and the rich sultry perfume of the wild air.Someday, it would become their home. Once the Blood Coven was safe. She looked forward to it. Strange she would find such beauty aswell as a home in another realm with an animus demon, a male whosepowerful body was a constant aphrodisiac and whose love was a warmembrace.

Turning from the window, she walked to thehand-carved cradle. She rocked the beloved piece of furniture Kolebuilt for their child.

Suddenly, Skyler’s palm flew to hermountainous belly as a wave of nausea settled there.

Here I go.

Her eyes lost focus. She heard no sounds, not even the chatter from the outer office or from the streetbelow. Her skin prickled. But she didn’t move or call for help.

When an image came into sharp focus, hermind’s eye zeroed in to settle on a computer screen.

Once the disturbing scene faded, she wasback in her chair, staring out the window at the Chicago skyline.Thankfully, she was seated because she was always a little dizzycoming out of a trance. At least, she now recognized when sheexperienced a vision.

Anna opened the door, chattering on aboutsome contract Skyler was supposedly working on. Her eyes widened asshe raced toward her boss as fast as her stilettos could carry her.“Brak,” she yelled into the outer office, “get in here.”

The administrative assistant pivoted thechair around, touching her hand to Skyler’s forehead.

The summoned Firebrand burst through thedoorway surprisingly fast for such a huge male. “What’s wrong?” Hestopped in front of the desk, his gun drawn while he surveyed theroom. Finding no danger, he holstered his weapon. “Is it thebaby?”

“No. I think she’s had another vision. Ihate those things. She’s damp. Her eyes are still glassy. Skyler.Skyler, are you with us?”

Anna’s voice came from far away. “Yes.”Skyler’s pupils riveted on the woman and the giant male.

Brak. That was his name. Her one-mansecurity force. Damn. He was big.

Skyler shook her head, rested a palm on herheart, and was back. “Yes. I’m fine.” She immediately glanced downat her huge baby mound, a possessive, calming hand there. Hertrainer assured her scrying would have no effect on her unbornbabe. Still she worried. Of course Kole was a raving lunatic aboutthe whole issue regardless of assurances.

“You had another vision?” Anna put a hand onBrak’s shoulder to let him know the emergency was over.

Both stared at Skyler as if two heads sat onher shoulders. Maybe three.

“Give me a minute here. I need tothink.”

The two didn’t so much as twitch amuscle.

Skyler’s eyes flashed around the room whileshe considered what she’d seen.

“I need the new director of technology uphere. Now.” Skyler raised her voice, something she rarely did sinceher icy demeanor usually did the trick, but at this moment, shedidn’t feel cold and calculating. She was steaming mad.

Anna raced out the door.

“Do you need me, Skyler?” Brak asked.

“No, but you might as well stay.”

He flopped his oversized body into one ofthe chairs in front of her desk, stretching out his enormousleather-clad legs.
