The firelight limned her; the glints of amber in her eyes flickered, as alive as the flames that danced in the grate, and all Veer could think of was how he could never tire of looking at her.

He bent his head, but Chandra met him, as if too impatient to wait, and kissed him. Veer let her take the reins for a minute, before the clamor of his own body took over and he deepened their kiss in a way that satisfied them both, if the way she sighed was any sign.

He filled his hands with her. Her jasmine scent lingered in the air, and he took a deep lungful, the smell soothing something inside him, the part of him that still couldn’t believe she was his, and that she had chosen to stay by his side.

Veer took his time removing her clothes, his mouth loving the taste of her skin. And the fine sweat that beaded on her skin. He licked the underside of her breast with the relish of tasting forbidden fruit, enjoying the way she shivered at the play of his fingers at the entrance to her body—her heavy skirt bunched around her waist—and her cries when he replaced them with his mouth. But he didn’t go beyond that.

“Veer!” she cried, seemingly exasperated, when Veer spent an inordinately long time nibbling on the inside of her elbow.

“What?” he asked with a pretend hurt face. “I was trying to be considerate.”

Her lips twitched and she burst out laughing. “Veer, you don’t know how to be considerate if it bit you in your very fine behind.” Her laughter faded to a challenging smirk. “At this pace, I’m likely to fall asleep.” Her eyes took on a sultry slant. “I believe I was promised a night I wouldn’t forget,” she said closing her fingers around his erection.

Veer hissed. “A good rule of the jungle is that you don't taunt a hungry beast, Princess. Don’t blame me when you can’t walk straight tomorrow,” he said in a growl, as he ripped the rest of her clothes and flipped her onto her stomach.

She looked over her shoulder, satisfaction in her eyes, as he lifted her hips, lining up his cock at her entrance. “Your warning doesn’t have as much bite as you seem to—” She screamed when he slid home without preamble.

Her muscles gripped him like a fist when he thrust inside her. Veer ran a gentle hand over her hip, in contrast to his punishing thrusts. He leaned over her quivering back, and lifted her hair, baring her neck.

“No bite, huh?” he panted, as bit into the meaty place between the shoulder and neck, snapping his hips forward, feeling her shudder.

“Go ahead and come, wife,” he growled, his fingers working at her clit. “I know you are close. Don’t worry, I won’t be done with you anytime soon. And it’s. All. Your. Fault.” he said, punctuating each of those words with deep thrusts.

He continued long into the night, savoring the naked expression of joy on her face when she found her pleasure many times. Loved the way she shed all her inhibition and was with him every step as he took them both to heights of pleasure.

Her head fell back as her body twisted in the throes of ecstasy. Sweat sheened their skin and still, Veer went on, his appetite insatiable.

“No more,” she said on a gasp.

“One last time, please, Chandra,” he cajoled, knowing he couldn't hold on for much longer, but the need to see her fall apart was driving him just as much as his own pleasure.

She complied, unable to refuse him. This last time, her orgasm seemed intense and no longer having the strength to scream, she settled for whimpers as he wrung pleasure from her body.Veer let go and felt the longest and most blissful release of his life. He stared at Chandra under him, taking care to keep his weight off her. She had already drifted off to sleep.

Veer fell beside her and tucked a blanket around them while she nuzzled against him, throwing an arm over his chest. Veer fell asleep, feeling complete in a way he hadn’t thought possible.

THE DUALITY OF EXISTENCE

Chandra woke with a start and scanned her surroundings. Through the window, she spotted pale snow draping over everything like a thick blanket. It was her second night there.

True to his word, Veer had taken her outside, and they spent a wonderful time playing in the snow, before the cold, hunger, and exhaustion had driven them inside the mansion. A hot bath and lunch followed, after which they slept through the afternoon, not having had much sleep the night before.

A smile curved her lips and then she winced when she felt a pleasurable ache in unfamiliar places.

Her husband was sleeping soundly on his stomach beside her, faint scratches, made from her fingernails, on his broad back. They had spent most of the evening and night making love. Again. Forgoing both dinner and sleep.

Her stomach gave a rumble. And now she was hungry. She got up and shivered in the cold air. The fire in the furnace had lowered itself to embers. Wrapping a blanket securely around her, she stepped out of the room, searching for some sustenance.

The mansion was chilly, dark, and cavernous. It was a good thing she remembered to take the torch from outside their sleeping quarters. She lit it with a flint and held it up. Her footsteps echoed mysteriously as she tried to recall where the kitchens must be. She hadn’t remembered everything from Veer’s tour earlier.

The outline of a tall door caught her eye. It was simple, with none of the typical ornate decorations, but it was massive with a single knocker on its smooth surface. She didn’t remember Veer mentioning this room before.

Curiosity reared its head, leading her feet toward it. The creak of the door was loud enough to wake up the entire mansion, but no one came. They both had agreed to have servants in the house in the mornings and leave in the evenings, so they could enjoy their privacy.

A series of dusty steps led down into a circular room bordered by tall columns, piled high with stacks of parchments. A massive table with various scorch marks lay pushed toward one wall. The floor seemed like it hadn’t been swept for a while, but when she wiped a patch with a dusty slipper, she found arcane symbols written underneath.

She took a few steps inside and then stopped. She wasn’t alone.
