Bree watches me and moves closer so she can see who’s calling aswell. When she does, panic washes over herface.

“Don’t answer,” she warns.

“I’m not. There’s no reason to call me.None whatsoever.” Fear spikes my nerves and I think of myevidence.

He’s not leaving me alone, and I thought by now hewould.

The phone stops ringing but seconds later a message comesthrough.Bree and I bothseeit.

It says:

Remember, my love, I’m watchingyou.

My heart races, jackhammering in mychest.I jump off the sofa and rush up to the window so I can seeoutside.Frantically, I look around, searching the shadows of the trees in the dark night for someone, or the presence of somebody watching thehouse.

I’m shaking so much I can hardlybreathe.

“I’m calling Ethan,” Bree says, coming up tome.

“No, don’t. I can’t involve anybody,” I say quickly, whirling around to faceher.“Please don’t.”

“Quinn, this is serious. He can’t do shit like this to you.”

“I know, but it would be worse for me if someone else wasinvolved.”

Shit, what the fuck is Riley playingat?

Don’t live in fear?

The saying doesn’t apply to me.Now I’m starting to see this might be a bigger problem than Irealized.

Chapter 33

Logan

“We got the son of a bitch!” Ethan booms. His voice sounds staticky on the phone, and like he might be outside.“We picked Billy up in the fucking motel.”

“Good job.” My whole body sighs with fucking relief. This means case closed for me.Thank fuck. Although I am interested to see how this is all going to play out.I’m sure Billy and his family will be the talk of the town for a long time to come.

Serves him right. I hope that motherfucker gets what he deserves.

“I swear this job of mine is going to age me.Looks like I’m gonna be at the station all night too.Processing shit and questioning his ass.”

“Want me to come over?” I glance about my office at the pile of contracts I have waiting to be signed off.I’ve suddenly gotten busy again in the last day, so it’s probably a good thing this case is wrapped up.

“Nah. You stay put. You’ve done a lot.I was just calling to let you know the good news. When next we meet, it should be at the bar, or somewhere like that.I owe you a beer for all your help. These last few weeks have felt like years.”

“You can say that again, and thanks for the beer.It would be nice to go drinking properly.Get wasted.”

“Get. Fucking. Wasted.” He laughs.“I’m all for that. We can pretend to be the devilish rebels we used to be.How the fuck did we become these responsible people, Logan?I used to hate cops. Now, look at me standing on the right side of the law.I’m pretty sure my tenth-grade teachers would have a fit.”

It’s more like they would die, but I’ll let him have that.

“And you’re such a good cop, too.Did you get your Bruce Willis moment tonight?”
