“Later.” I replied. “I’m getting on a redeye.”
“Tonight?”
I shrugged. “No time like the present.”
“Want me to send Ghoul to the airport?”
“Nah. I’ll find my way in.” I told her. “If I can get on an earlier one, I’ll try for it. But I’m coming.”
Eris smiled.
With our conversation over, I set things motion. The first was to book a flight. The earliest was on leaving at seven that night. Before leaving, I packed a small bag. My first stop was the Foster home to hand over the paper and found out if I could move states with Keegan. Turned out, I had to keep Keegan for six months before I could adopt him under the foster-to-adopt program.
Since the judge had terminated his parents’ parental rights to him, that shouldn’t be a problem. The issue now, was that if I somehow managed to fix things between myself and Angel, we’d have to do the long-distance thing for six months.
I sighed.
After handing in the paperwork, I stopped at Kingston’s place to speak with him about what I was planning on doing. Both he and Mia looked at me and smiled.
“Well, good.” He told me. “Mia and I had a talk with Angel yesterday. He says the offer still stands. I was going to talk to you about it tomorrow.”
“You’re moving to California then?”
Mia nodded. “We figured, this way, King can still have a hand in law enforcement. The money is better than carrying a gun.”
“And I’ll more time for my family.” Kingston smiled happily. “Hawk, Mia and I were talking, and we were wondering if you could be Vi’s godmother.”
I quirked a brow. “Me?”
“Yes.” Mia laughed.
I flailed—I actually flailed with happiness. “I’d be honoured! I’ll teach her all the curse words.”
“Oh boy.” Kingston groaned as I hugged him. “Now go. We can talk about the move later.”
“Um—Kingston, I handed in the paperwork to foster Keegan.”
Kingston pressed his lips into a thin line. “You did—have you spoken to—no, you didn’t have a talk with Angel first.”
“I’m doing the right thing and praying for the best.”
Kingston nodded. “Good luck.”
Mia kissed my cheek, had me wait so she could grab a sandwich and a drink for me. “Go get your man.”
I hugged her tightly, cuddled little Violet for a moment so Mia could use the bathroom. Kingston continued making their dinner. I didn’t mind the time I had with the little girl. Her soft sounds and the way she poked at my nose made me happy.
By the time I was on my way, the sky had opened up over Tulsa. Rain poured down on the taxi, making the ride from Kingston’s place a little slow and problematic. I tapped my foot on the floor while impatiently checking my watch.
Thankfully, I didn’t have a suitcase to be checked. That would make going through customs a bit faster and easier.
While the people around me napped, I stayed awake. After landing, I took a cab to Eris’ place and was admitted into the house by Ghoul. Eris had fallen asleep waiting for me. I didn’t want him to wake her. Instead, he showed me to my room so I could shower and change.
Ghoul handed me the keys to one of his cars and I sped away from his place to Angel’s. I drove by the house a couple of times before realizing the front had changed because of the explosion. I then had to call Ghoul to remind me the number of the house. When I pulled up to the curb, Angel was standing out front speaking with Nikau and Leta.
I recognized her from the pictures in his house and the video from his birthday party. Though I was nervous and was tempted to speed away as fast as I could, I knew it was time to face the music. I climbed out of the car in time to see Romeo exited the house with Tiberius on his leash. Romeo took Leta’s hand and they walked off down the street.
Jogging across the street, I approached them slowly.
