Amber whirls around, gun aimed right at my chest. “Don’t you dare talk about him like that. You don’t know anything about him.” She huffs, and I can’t get over the crazy look in her eyes. “Anyway, he took me to Forest Grove to live with him. He was so sweet and loving. He gave me anything that I wanted. Then you came along.”
“I didn’t do anything to Charlie.”
“Shut. Up,” she grits out. “I’m talking now. Everything was fine until you ran from Brady. That was a beautifully laid plan, and you just had to go fuck it up. That’s when Charlie put me in your path that night. Those guys you fought off? Were Charlie’s guys. Did your dumbass really think that anyone would latch onto you like I did? For whatever reason, your guys have, but that’s going to end soon enough. Maybe I’ll keep a couple for myself. Possibly Axel. Like father, like son.” She giggles at that. “And the big one? I bet he fucks like a beast.”
“They will never want you after what you’ve done.”
“Never say never. I have my ways.”
“What about the guys from the bar? If Charlie’s your lover, why the hookups?”
“You really are a dense bitch, aren’t you? They weren’t hookups; they were recruits. Charlie couldn’t do it himself, so I went and got them for him.”
“He used you, Amber, because he was hiding from Axel.”
“Charlie would never use me. He loves me.”
“Charlie doesn’t love anyone. He’s not capable of it. He didn’t even love his own son.”
“That’s because Axel is weak. He fell right into the traps time and time again. Charlie set everything up, and Axel wasn’t smart enough to figure it out. Charlie knew as soon as you were away from Brady that Axel would come running back. Sean wasn’t a fluke, Chelsea. You were meant to meet him that night.” It takes a few seconds for her words to sink in, and when they do, my mind is spinning.
“You guys put Sean there?”
“Yes,” she says in exasperation. “Someone like Sean doesn’t want girls like you. Any time he was away from you, he’d meet me. We’d fuck and then make fun of everything that happened while you guys were together. Sean’s been the inside man the entire time. Well, besides me. You have to admit, it worked flawlessly up until now.”
Even as I try to reject it, little things start adding up. Sean and his persistence that first night. His cool dismissal of Amber. Him coming to the bar the following Friday. I thought it was a coincidence because that was the only night I was ever there. Amber must have told him where I’d be. That’s the night I met Kai, and things spiraled from there. “What about Kai?”
“I’d love to take credit for that, but it was Sean’s idea. You were so desperate for attention that he had to call in for backup so that he could deal with it all.” I start shaking my head, trying to get rid of the thoughts that Sean betrayed me—betrayedus.“How do you think I have footage on the inside? Sean made sure that your hacker’s plan didn’t work. He’s probably already working on the rest of your guys to come to our side. Sean’s very convincing,” she purrs, and I want to throw up, cry, or both.
“I don’t believe you.”
“Think about it. There’s no way that we got all that information without help from someone. Charlie and I had a good laugh that we almost convinced Axel it was Cole. But the one you never suspected was the reason all along. We were wishing Axel would put a bullet in Cole.”
I feel my heart breaking into a million pieces because it makessense. Every I love you, or every time that he told me I was his, was a lie. I’ve literally been sleeping with the enemy. Everything that I ate that day comes roaring from my body. I bend over and throw up everywhere.
“You believe me now, don’t you?” Amber mocks. “I can’t blame you for being blindsided. Sean is a fucking God in bed. After he left you, he’d come fuck me so hard—”
I can’t hear anything else. My vision blurs, and I dive off the couch. I hit her with a tackle and clamp my hand over hers so she doesn’t let go of the detonator. Her head smacks the floor so hard that it bounces. “You stupid fucking bitch!” I yell. I pull back my other hand and punch her right in the mouth. After the first hit, I can’t stop. My whole future is evaporating in front of me because there’s no way I can still be with the other guys. They’ll always remind me of Sean and the greatest betrayal of my life. I thought it hurt when I found out Amber was the enemy, but it’s nothing compared to the almost crippling pain that I feel now. I cover it with anger and let my fist fly.
“Get off of me, you fat whore!” Amber yells, shoving at my chest.
I pull my hand back and wrap both of them around her neck, squeezing.
That’s when the detonator hits the floor.
Chapter40
Axel
Charlie’s words halt my punch mid-air. “What did you say?”
“Amber has Chelsea,” Charlie laughs. “You kill me, and she’s going to be scattered all over Abbs Valley. The girl is insane, but she listens to everything that I say.”
I look back at Kai, and he looks as scared as I feel. This could be another one of Charlie’s lies. There’s been plenty of them. But I have no way of fucking knowing because we’re cut off from the outside. I know without looking that he has our phones blocked, too, so it’s useless.
“We need to find the others,” Kai says.
“Not until you let me go. I’ll call Amber and let her know as soon as I’m clear.”
