The creature gurgled, which I realized was a laugh as it approached, taking its time sizing up its prey.
“Eat the chocolate,” Orion demanded. “It’ll give me enough of a boost to kill it.”
Was he serious?
“No way!”
The creature released a screech that made me throw my hands over my ears. It dove for me, claws extended, and I braced myself for pain before a flash of silver launched in front of me. Logan’s wolf form cried out as he took the brunt of the creature’s blow. It bit down on him and worked its jaw into his scruff, sending blood matting into his fur as Logan thrashed, then went still.
“Logan!” I cried out. “Fuck.” I wasn’t going to let him die just because of my pride.
I shoved the chocolate into my mouth.
Holy shit, that was delicious. I tried to keep myself steady as the liquid sex melted on my tongue.
Ten minutes. That’s how long Olivia had said it took to kick in. Logan had to survive until then. “Your boost is coming,” I promised Orion as I licked my lower lip. “Be ready.”
He nodded and closed his eyes, building a golden glow that shimmered behind his freckles as if his flesh was a speckled piece of candy covered in miraculous and divine wrapping.
Captivated, it took me a moment to turn my attention back to my attacker who continued to gnaw on the limp wolf. Protectiveness washed over me, quickly followed by rage that anyone or anything would dare harm one of my Virtues.
I dove into that cold sensation that had been growing in my chest, forcing the darkness to splinter across my skin and extract the claws that marked me as a kindred creature to thisthing.I hated that more than anything, but I couldn’t allow Logan to suffer because of me.
The demonspawn released its hold on the wolf and revealed blood that marred its jagged teeth. It snarled at me, accepting my challenge as I pounced.
We tumbled away from the wolf, which was my goal. That dark pit inside my chest gnawed at me and grew every moment I forced my change. I didn’t have the energy for this and I already could feel myself weakening and fading. One hand changed back to normal as the creature jabbed its claws into my shoulder, sending a flood of pain jolting through my body. I bit back a cry and tried to fend it off.
Then the effects of the chocolate hit.
A burst of pleasure wiped out my pain and my mouth opened on a gasp. The room blew wide open with stars and cosmic dust as Orion shed his mortal form and changed into the god he truly was underneath as he drank in the raw lust that spread through my body, only intensified by his proximity. He was golden, gorgeous, and blazed sunlight that kissed me in the most intimate of places. Warmth flooded through me and banished the cold that had threatened to take me under. He matched my gaze for a moment. Golden irises watched me, took in my pleasure, and increased it a hundredfold by a stroke of his attentions that ran like an invisible hand over my breasts and slid down to my core.
Orion grinned, making him look even more gorgeous as he approached and simply walked through the dark creature trying to kill me. It evaporated in a burst of ash drenched in Orion’s perfection.
This was Orion’s true glory—and I had a feeling it was our Virtue connection that had unleashed it.
He extended a hand and all I wanted to do was to explore his skin and get lost in him. Tell him what we really were to each other and see the acceptance in his eyes.
But something nagged at me, a concern that threatened to dampen my pleasure. “Logan,” I breathed.
Orion’s smile dimmed ever slightly, but he waved a hand to the wolf as golden light embraced the creature and smoothed away the grime and blood of the attack. The wolf got to his feet and intelligent soft blue eyes turned on us, watchful and curious.
Logan was alive and safe.
I could lose myself in Orion without guilt.
So I did.
I thoughtthat I was already at my limit, but then he touched me.
“Gods,” I breathed, relishing as he ran his fingers up my arm, leaving golden dust that sparked pleasure through every nerve.
His fingers ran through my hair, gripping the roots to tilt my head back as his lips hovered over mine. I held my breath, waiting to see what he’d say, what he would demand of me before he would let me lose myself in his oblivion. “Not gods, little star. Just me.” He angled me how he wanted as he took me with a kiss that tasted of sunlight and stardust. Heat rushed to my core and I wrapped my arms around his neck.
A part of me wanted to retort his cocky comment, but his impressive erection pressed hot against my abdomen, making me want so much more than just a kiss.
He backed me against a wall that had warmed from his presence. Everything around him threatened to melt, including me.
“More,” I breathed between kisses.
